PART 4

They put Tyler in the back of Jaxon’s heated truck.

Boone wrapped him in emergency blankets and pressed warm packs under his arms.

Tyler sat rigidly, eyes fixed on the door handle.

Seth and Luke refused to leave him.

Even after Jaxon checked them twice.

Even after Boone promised they were safe.

Even after the sheriff said the ambulance was waiting.

Seth crawled onto the seat beside Tyler and held his sleeve.

“You can come with us.”

Tyler looked at him like the words hurt.

“I can’t.”

Luke frowned.

“Why?”

Tyler did not answer.

Jaxon climbed into the front seat and turned around.

His voice was softer now.

“What is your name?”

“Tyler.”

“Tyler what?”

Tyler hesitated.

“Mason.”

Jaxon nodded.

“I’m Jaxon.”

“I know.”

Jaxon raised one eyebrow.

Tyler looked down.

“Roy talks about your club.”

The truck went quiet.

Boone’s face hardened.

Jaxon asked, “Roy who?”

Tyler’s hands tightened under the blanket.

“Roy Vickers.”

Boone muttered something under his breath.

The sheriff opened the truck door.

“Jaxon, we need statements.”

Jaxon did not look away from Tyler.

“You know Roy?”

The sheriff’s expression changed.

“Unfortunately.”

That single word confirmed what Tyler had spent years trying not to say.

Roy was not misunderstood.

Not unlucky.

Not hard on him because life was hard.

Other people knew.

They just had not reached him.

The sheriff crouched near the open door.

“Tyler, did Roy hurt you?”

Tyler’s throat worked.

If he said yes, the world would change.

If he said no, he knew exactly what would happen.

Back to the trailer.

Back to the broken porch light.

Back to Roy saying nobody came.

Seth leaned against him.

“Tell my dad.”

Tyler looked at the little boy he had carried through snow.

Then at Jaxon.

Then at the sheriff.

“Yes,” he whispered.

The word was small.

But everyone heard it.

Boone closed his eyes for one second.

Jaxon’s hands curled around the steering wheel.

The sheriff stood.

“Then he is not going back tonight.”

Tyler’s face crumpled.

He tried not to cry.

Failed.

Jaxon opened the back door and climbed in beside him.

He did not touch Tyler.

He only sat close enough that the boy knew someone had chosen the same side.

“You saved my sons,” Jaxon said.

May you like

“Now you let us stand between you and him.”
