PART 8

Roy’s trial was small.

No dramatic courtroom shouting.

No crowd of reporters.

Just wood benches, fluorescent lights, and Tyler sitting between Dana and Boone because Jaxon was listed as a witness.

Tyler wore the new coat Mara bought him.

He kept Seth’s toy motorcycle in his pocket.

Not because he needed luck.

Because it reminded him someone wanted him to come back.

Roy looked different in court.

Smaller.

Clean shirt.

Combed hair.

No whiskey smell.

He tried to smile at Tyler.

Tyler stared through him.

The prosecutor presented the hospital records.

School absence reports.

Neighbor statements.

Photos of the trailer.

The backpack Roy had dumped on the kitchen floor.

Then the rescue.

The judge listened as Jaxon described finding Tyler in the blizzard, barely standing, still shielding the twins from the wind.

When asked what Tyler said, Jaxon’s voice tightened.

“He asked us not to send him back.”

Roy’s attorney tried to suggest Tyler exaggerated because he wanted attention from the bikers.

Boone laughed once.

The judge looked at him.

Boone apologized.

Not very convincingly.

Then Tyler testified.

His voice shook at first.

He described the trailer.

The rules.

The backpack.

The night he ran.

He did not describe every injury.

He did not have to.

The records spoke where words were too heavy.

When the attorney asked why he had not told someone sooner, Tyler looked at Roy.

Then at the judge.

“Because he said nobody would come.”

The courtroom went silent.

Jaxon closed his eyes.

Dana put one hand near Tyler’s elbow but did not touch unless asked.

The judge found enough for protection orders and criminal proceedings to continue.

Roy was remanded.

Tyler was not going back.

Afterward, outside the courthouse, Tyler stood under a gray sky.

Jaxon approached slowly.

“You did good.”

Tyler shook his head.

“I hated it.”

“Both can be true.”

Tyler looked at the courthouse doors.

“What happens now?”

Dana answered from behind them.

“Now the placement hearing.”

Tyler’s face tightened.

Jaxon crouched slightly so they were eye level.

“No matter what happens, you are not disappearing.”

Tyler touched the toy motorcycle in his pocket.

“Promise?”

Jaxon held his gaze.

May you like

“Promise.”
