PART 5
The hospital smelled like antiseptic, wet leather, and snow melting off biker boots.
The Iron Saints filled the waiting room without meaning to scare anyone.
They stood against walls.
Held coffee cups too small for their hands.
Spoke softly because Seth and Luke were asleep nearby under warm blankets.
Jaxon sat between the twins’ beds and kept one hand on each mattress.
Every few minutes, he looked toward the exam room where Boone stayed with Tyler.
The doctor documented everything.
Frostbite risk.
Bruised ribs.
Old fractures that had healed wrong.
Malnutrition.
Exhaustion.
A split knuckle from breaking the SUV window.
Tyler stared at the ceiling while the doctor spoke.
He looked embarrassed by every injury.
As if pain were bad manners.
Boone noticed.
“You do not apologize for wounds someone else put on you.”
Tyler turned his head away.
“My stepdad says I make things worse.”
Boone’s voice stayed steady.
“Your stepdad is wrong.”
“No one ever says that.”
“I just did.”
Through the glass, Tyler saw Jaxon standing with the twins.
Seth woke first and immediately asked for Tyler.
The nurse tried to soothe him.
He cried harder.
Jaxon looked at Boone.
Boone nodded.
A few minutes later, Seth and Luke were wheeled to Tyler’s doorway in warm socks and hospital blankets.
Seth lifted one hand.
“Tyler?”
Tyler tried to sit up.
Pain stopped him.
“I’m here.”
Luke said, “Daddy says you’re a hero.”
Tyler looked confused.
“I just opened the window.”
Seth shook his head.
“You carried me.”
Tyler’s eyes filled.
No one had ever called him a hero before.
Roy called him useless.
Teachers called him quiet.
Neighbors called him that poor boy.
Hero sounded like a word for someone else.
Jaxon stepped into the room.
He looked at Tyler for a long moment.
Then placed something on the bedside table.
A small toy motorcycle from Seth’s backpack.
“Seth says you should keep it until he can ride with you again.”
Tyler stared at it.
“I can’t take his toy.”
Jaxon said, “Around here, gifts are not debts.”
“They are proof someone wants you to have something.”
Tyler’s mouth trembled.
The sheriff entered before he could answer.
His face was grim.
“We found Roy.”
Tyler stopped breathing.
Jaxon’s voice dropped.
“And?”
The sheriff looked at Tyler.
May you like
“He is in custody.”
