PART 7

The Iron Saints clubhouse changed for Tyler before Tyler ever stepped inside.

The bar signs came down.

The guest room was cleared.

The lock on the bedroom door was fixed from the inside, not the outside.

Boone stocked the bathroom with new toothbrushes, bandages, and soap that did not smell like hospital fear.

Jaxon’s sister, Mara, brought sheets, school supplies, and a winter coat that actually fit.

“Don’t make it look like charity,” she told the bikers.

Boone frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Mara pointed at the room.

“It means no one stands around staring when the kid walks in.”

So when Tyler arrived for his first approved daytime visit, the clubhouse did not erupt.

Nobody cheered.

Nobody clapped.

Nobody made him feel like a rescued animal.

Seth and Luke ruined the plan immediately.

They ran at him full speed.

“Tyler!”

Tyler froze.

Then both boys wrapped themselves around his legs.

He looked at Jaxon, unsure.

Jaxon smiled slightly.

“That part is allowed.”

Tyler touched their heads like he was afraid they might vanish.

The twins dragged him to a table where they had drawn pictures of the blizzard.

In every drawing, Tyler was tall.

Taller than trees.

Taller than trucks.

In one, he had a cape.

Tyler stared at it.

“I’m not that big.”

Luke said, “You were in the snow.”

Tyler had no answer.

That afternoon, Dana inspected Jaxon’s home.

Not the clubhouse.

His actual house.

A modest ranch outside town with a fenced yard and two bedrooms across from the twins’ room.

She checked smoke detectors.

Food.

Locks.

Emergency contacts.

Weapons storage.

Jaxon answered every question without attitude.

That impressed Dana more than charm would have.

Later, Tyler sat on the back porch with Jaxon while the twins built a snow fort nearby.

Tyler asked, “What if the judge says no?”

Jaxon looked at the mountains.

“Then we keep showing up until the judge runs out of reasons.”

Tyler swallowed.

“You don’t even know me.”

Jaxon turned to him.

“I know you carried my son when your ribs were bruised.”

“I know you lied about pain so they would not be scared.”

“I know you asked for nothing after giving everything.”

Tyler looked away fast.

May you like

Jaxon added, “That is enough to start.”
