Chapter 4

Vivienne did not call Victor because she was helpless.
She called because timing mattered.
Dominic had spent years teaching rooms to wait for his permission.
Victor had spent years teaching Vivienne never to wait for permission when danger entered wearing a tuxedo.
The phone rang once.
Only once.
Victor answered with no greeting.
“I’m watching.”
Vivienne’s eyes stayed on Dominic.
Of course he was.
Victor never trusted Dominic.
He had been polite at the wedding, distant at holidays, silent during business dinners where Dominic praised himself too often and interrupted Vivienne too easily.
After Sophia was born, Victor changed.
His suspicion became colder.
Not because Dominic was cruel to the child directly.
He was not.
That would have been simpler.
Dominic was affectionate when watched, absent when needed, generous with gifts and poor with presence. He sent dolls from airports, flowers after missed birthdays, and voice notes when Sophia wanted bedtime stories.
Victor once told Vivienne, “A man who performs fatherhood for cameras will eventually forget where the child ends and the performance begins.”
Vivienne defended Dominic then.
She did not defend him now.
In the lobby, Dominic stopped halfway down the staircase.
Vanessa’s hand tightened on his sleeve.
The young boy looked confused.
Not guilty.
Just confused.
Vivienne made herself remember that.
Children were never responsible for the arrangements adults built around them.
She raised the phone.
“Victor, take away everything he thinks he owns.”
The words sounded impossible even as she spoke them.
Not loud.
Not dramatic.
But precise enough that the room understood money had entered the conversation before documents did.
Victor answered calmly.
“I’ve already started.”
Then the vibrations began.
One phone.
Then five.
Then ten.
Executives checking screens beneath chandelier light.
No readable messages.
No numbers.
No account balances.
No takeover announcements.
Only faces changing.
Chloe’s folded arms loosened.
A man near the flowers whispered, “Now?”
Another answered, “I don’t know.”
Dominic saw the reaction moving through his own lobby and understood before anyone explained.
Control had left him.
Maybe not completely.
Not finally.
But visibly.
Vanessa looked up at him.
“Dominic?”
His eyes stayed on Vivienne.
“What did you do?”
Vivienne lowered the phone.
Sophia pressed both hands over her ears now, trembling.
Vivienne bent slightly and kissed the top of her daughter’s hair.
Then she looked back at Dominic.
May you like
“I answered the door you locked me behind.”
Read Chapter 5 👉 Because the first phones vibrating did not reveal the takeover, but they proved Dominic’s empire had started listening to someone else.
