Chapter 8

Vanessa’s confidence began collapsing in pieces.

First her posture.

Then her voice.

Then the way she looked at Dominic—not like a partner, but like a woman reviewing a contract she had signed without reading.

“You told me this was settled,” she said.

Dominic’s eyes flashed.

“Not now.”

“When?”

His jaw tightened.

Vivienne watched the exchange without pleasure.

It would have been easier to hate Vanessa if she looked triumphant.

But Vanessa looked increasingly uncertain, and uncertainty made the room more complicated.

Still, she had stood upstairs as “wife.”

She had allowed Chloe to deny Vivienne downstairs.

She had let a child be positioned as Dominic’s son while Sophia walked into the lobby unaware.

Whatever Vanessa did not know, she had accepted enough.

Dominic lowered his voice.

“Take him upstairs.”

The boy looked at Vanessa.

“Mom?”

Sophia’s fingers tightened around Vivienne’s coat.

The two children again became the center, though adults kept pretending the argument was about power.

Vivienne looked at Dominic.

“Did you tell him about Sophia?”

Dominic froze.

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

The boy looked at Dominic.

“Who’s Sophia?”

Sophia pressed into Vivienne’s side.

Vivienne closed her eyes for one brief second.

There it was.

The cruelty was symmetrical.

Each child hidden from the other.

Each woman given a version with missing pieces.

Each room arranged so Dominic remained the only bridge.

Dominic said sharply, “Enough.”

Vivienne opened her eyes.

“Yes. It is.”

She lifted the phone again, not speaking into it this time, simply making it visible.

Dominic’s gaze locked onto it.

The screen remained unreadable.

No financial documents.

No balances.

No takeover announcement.

Just the possibility that Victor was still listening.

Chloe stepped around the reception counter, trying to regain control.

“Mrs. Sterling, perhaps your daughter should be taken somewhere quiet.”

Vivienne looked at her.

“My daughter has heard enough from strangers tonight.”

Chloe’s face hardened.

“You cannot disrupt a corporate event like this.”

Vivienne’s voice stayed soft.

“I didn’t disrupt it. I arrived at it.”

Several executives looked down.

That sentence reached too many people.

Because everyone knew arrival was not the scandal.

The scandal was what she arrived to find.
