Chapter 7

Sophia began crying silently.
No sound.
Just tears.
That undid Vivienne more than screaming would have.
She knelt fully on the marble floor, ignoring the expensive dress beneath her coat.
“Baby,” she whispered, “look at me.”
Sophia did.
Her brown eyes were wet and confused.
“Did I do something wrong?”
Vivienne’s heart cracked cleanly.
“No. Never.”
“Daddy looks mad.”
“Daddy is scared.”
Dominic heard that from a few feet away.
His expression shifted.
Maybe shame.
Maybe anger.
Maybe both fighting for space.
Vivienne touched Sophia’s necklace.
“You made something kind. That is never wrong.”
Sophia whispered, “Can we go home?”
Vivienne wanted to say yes.
Immediately.
But the lobby was not finished with them.
Leaving too early would give Dominic the chance to reshape everything: hysterical wife, confused child, private misunderstanding, jealous scene.
Vivienne stood slowly, keeping Sophia tucked against her side.
Dominic stepped closer again, careful now.
“Let me talk to her.”
“No.”
“She’s my daughter.”
Vivienne looked at him.
“Then stop making her watch you lie.”
The words struck him in front of everyone.
Vanessa’s hand tightened around the young boy’s shoulder.
The boy looked up at Dominic with a question forming but not spoken.
Chloe’s eyes flicked toward the guests, calculating how much damage had already spread.
The woman from the elevator finally took one step forward.
Dominic saw it and raised his hand.
“Stay there.”
The woman stopped.
Not because he commanded her.
Because she had not yet chosen to proceed.
That distinction terrified him.
Vivienne noticed.
For years, Dominic had confused obedience with power. But true authority did not always move when challenged.
Sometimes it waited.
Dominic turned back to Vivienne.
“What did Victor tell them?”
Vivienne’s face remained unreadable.
“You should ask yourself why you’re afraid of the answer.”
Vanessa whispered, “Who is Victor?”
No one answered.
That was the third silence of the night that belonged to Vivienne.
The first came after Chloe’s insult.
The second after the phones vibrated.

The third after Vanessa realized she had been standing beside a man with enemies inside his own marriage.
