Chapter 9

Dominic set the champagne glass on the staircase rail.

His hand was no longer steady.

That, more than anything, frightened Chloe.

She had seen Dominic under pressure before.

Hostile negotiations.

Market losses.

Regulatory inquiries.

Family emergencies he treated like scheduling conflicts.

He always performed calm.

But Vivienne’s arrival had broken the structure beneath him because she had not attacked the obvious thing first.

Not Vanessa.

Not Chloe.

Not the boy.

Not the gala.

She had called Victor.

And everyone who understood real power in that building felt the shift before they knew the cause.

Dominic descended fully into the lobby.

Now he stood at the same level as Vivienne.

No staircase.

No height.

No staged family behind him.

Just a husband facing the wife he had tried to keep downstairs.

“Vivienne,” he said quietly, “think about what happens next.”

She looked at him.

“I am.”

“No, you’re reacting.”

Sophia flinched at his tone.

Vivienne’s eyes sharpened.

“Lower your voice.”

Dominic stopped.

The instruction was simple, maternal, absolute.

Not for herself.

For Sophia.

And because it was for Sophia, he obeyed.

Vanessa watched that obedience and seemed to understand something painful: Dominic still responded to Vivienne in ways he had not admitted.

The elevator figures remained near Chloe’s desk, still unidentified, still waiting.

Guests continued holding silent phones.

Some screens glowed unreadably.

No documents appeared.

No account balances.

No announcement.

Only tension.

Dominic leaned closer, voice low enough that only the nearest guests heard.

“You have no idea what he’ll take if you let him loose.”

Vivienne’s smile was faint and devastating.

“You still think this is about what he’ll take.”

Dominic’s brow tightened.

She looked at Sophia.

“It’s about what you made her see.”

For once, Dominic had no immediate answer.

The boy on the stairs whispered something to Vanessa.

Vanessa did not respond.

Her eyes were on Dominic now, not Vivienne.

Chloe looked toward the elevator again.

The woman in the dark suit took another step forward.

Dominic turned sharply.

“Don’t.”

This time, no one stopped.
