PART 3

Celeste had planned the gala as a coronation.

Not officially.

Officially, it was the hotel’s seventy-fifth anniversary.

Privately, Celeste wanted the night to announce her new redevelopment vision.

She had a stage built in the lobby.

A string quartet hired.

Flowers imported.

Champagne stacked high.

A photographer from a luxury magazine positioned near the staircase.

The invitation called it A New Era for Whitmore.

Mara hated that phrase.

New era usually meant old promises were about to be broken.

Two weeks before the gala, Mara found the first draft of Celeste’s redevelopment plan.

It was sent to her accidentally by an assistant who still thought Mara deserved to know things.

The plan proposed selling the garden annex to a private club.

Converting the staff housing floors into luxury suites.

Moving long-term employees to third-party contracts.

Using reserve funds to finance a branded spa tower on the adjacent land.

The adjacent land was not empty.

It held the old courtyard garden where Eleanor had scattered her mother’s ashes.

It also held the staff childcare center Mara had funded quietly for six years.

Celeste’s plan called it underutilized square footage.

Mara called Elliot Graves immediately.

He asked one question.

“Does Richard know?”

Mara looked at the proposal.

Her father’s initials appeared on the review page.

“Yes.”

Elliot went quiet.

That was worse than surprise.

They met the next morning.

Elliot brought the trust documents.

The danger clause was clear.

If the operating trustee approved transfer, liquidation, encumbrance, or misuse of core assets against the trust purpose, the beneficiary could execute emergency consolidation.

Mara read the sentence twice.

“What does that mean in human language?”

Elliot folded his hands.

“It means your mother anticipated a day when someone charming might convince your father to sell the soul of the hotel.”

Mara’s eyes filled.

“And she gave me the power to stop it?”

“She gave you the obligation.”

Mara signed the preparation documents that afternoon.

Elliot could execute the transfer with one direct instruction from her.

Mara did not want to use it.

That was the part no one would understand later.

She loved her father.

Even weak fathers remain fathers.

She gave Richard one chance.

At the gala, she brought the legal folder and asked to speak with him before Celeste’s announcement.

Celeste saw the folder.

Then saw the threat.

That was when she decided to remove Mara in front of everyone.
