PART 6

The emergency board meeting began forty-three minutes later.

Not in the ballroom.

Not under chandeliers.

In the private conference room on the mezzanine, where Eleanor Whitmore had once slept on a sofa during the hotel’s first winter reopening.

Mara sat at the head of the table because Elliot told her to.

She did not want the chair.

That was why she probably deserved it.

Richard sat to her right.

He looked twenty years older than he had at the start of the gala.

Celeste was not invited.

She stood outside the glass door arguing with a board assistant until Marcus Bell, the hotel’s head of security, quietly blocked her view.

Inside, Elliot placed the trust documents on the table.

“The emergency consolidation was properly executed.”

“The beneficiary is Mara Eleanor Whitmore.”

“The operating authority held by Richard Whitmore is suspended pending review.”

The board chair, Diane Porter, stared at Richard.

“Did you sign off on the annex proposal?”

Richard’s mouth opened.

Then closed.

Mara answered.

“Yes.”

Diane looked at her.

“You have proof?”

Mara slid the folder across the table.

“Initialed review page.”

“Email thread.”

“Draft financing plan.”

“Projected use of reserve accounts.”

The chief financial officer went pale.

“The reserve accounts are restricted.”

Elliot nodded.

“Correct.”

Richard finally spoke.

“I never intended to drain them.”

Mara looked at him.

“But you intended to let Celeste borrow against them.”

His silence answered.

One board member leaned back.

“Richard, why?”

Richard rubbed both hands over his face.

“She made it sound like the only way forward.”

Mara’s voice was quiet.

“Mom made it through bankruptcy without selling the staff floors.”

Richard flinched.

“That was different.”

“No.”

“She had less money and more courage.”

The room went silent.

Richard looked at her with eyes full of grief.

“Mara.”

She shook her head.

“Not tonight.”

Celeste pounded once on the glass.

Everyone turned.

Her face was red.

Humiliated.

Furious.

Elliot did not look at her for more than a second.

“Security has already revoked her temporary event authority.”

Richard turned sharply.

“You revoked Celeste?”

Mara looked at him.

“No.”

“You gave her authority that was never yours to give.”

Diane folded her hands.

“Mara, what are you requesting?”

Mara opened the last page of the folder.

“Immediate freeze on all redevelopment activity.”

“Independent audit.”

“Removal of Celeste Marrow from all hotel operations.”

“And a formal review of my father’s trustee conduct.”

Richard closed his eyes.

The daughter had not raised her voice.

She did not need to.

The documents were louder.
