PART 8
Celeste screamed in the lobby when security escorted her out.
The gala had fully collapsed by then.
Guests stood in clusters pretending not to film while filming.
Reporters had not been invited, but society guests were often worse.
They knew how to make scandal travel wearing pearls.
Celeste’s voice echoed beneath the chandelier.
“This family is insane.”
Marcus walked beside her.
Calm.
Professional.
Unmoved.
She pointed toward the floral arrangement.
“I planned this entire night.”
Marcus opened the front door.
“And now it is over.”
The cold air hit her.
Her car had not arrived yet.
That humiliation seemed to injure her more than being removed from the boardroom.
Mara watched from the mezzanine balcony.
Not with satisfaction.
With exhaustion.
Richard stood beside her.
For a long time, neither spoke.
Then he whispered, “I loved your mother.”
Mara kept looking at the lobby.
“I know.”
“I never meant to betray her.”
“That is the problem.”
He looked at her.
She finally turned.
“You think betrayal has to be intended to count.”
Richard’s eyes filled.
“I was lonely.”
Mara’s face softened for one second.
Then steadied.
“So was I.”
He looked down.
Those three words did what legal documents could not.
They found him.
Mara continued.
“Mom died and you let me become the person who reminded you of loss.”
“You let Celeste become the person who helped you avoid it.”
Richard covered his mouth.
Mara’s voice shook now.
“You chose comfort until comfort started signing papers.”
He whispered, “I’m sorry.”
Mara wanted that apology.
She hated that she wanted it.
But wanting something did not make it enough.
“Sorry does not restore trustee authority.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
“Do you?”
He looked toward the lobby doors where Celeste had disappeared.
“I think I am beginning to.”
Mara looked at the marble floor below.
The security guard who had almost removed her now stood near the entrance, visibly shaken.
She walked down the stairs.
He straightened.
“Ms. Whitmore, I’m sorry.”
Mara stopped in front of him.
“What’s your name?”
“Calvin, ma’am.”
“Calvin, did Celeste instruct you to remove me?”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Did you know I had ownership authority?”
“No, ma’am.”
Mara nodded.
“Then next time someone asks you to humiliate a person in public, ask whose power you are serving.”
Calvin lowered his eyes.
“Yes, ma’am.”
Mara walked back into the lobby.
