part 4

PART 4
Mara found Richard in the side corridor before the gala began.
He was adjusting his cufflinks in a mirror.
For a second, he looked like the father she missed.
Older.
Tired.
Still handsome in the way men become when people forgive them too easily.
“Dad,” Mara said.
He turned.
His face softened.
“Mara.”
Then he saw the folder.
The softness vanished.
“Not tonight.”
That hurt more than anger.
Mara stepped closer.
“Celeste is trying to sell the annex land.”
Richard sighed.
“She is modernizing.”
“She is liquidating.”
“You sound like Elliot.”
“Good.”
His jaw tightened.
“The hotel needs growth.”
“The hotel has reserves.”
“Those reserves exist because Mom refused debt.”
Richard looked away.
There it was.
Eleanor.
The name Celeste avoided and Richard could not bear.
Mara lowered her voice.
“Dad, she is using you.”
His eyes flashed.
“She loves me.”
Mara did not flinch.
“Then why does every version of her plan require removing Mom from the building?”
Richard’s face went pale.
Before he could answer, Celeste appeared at the corridor entrance.
Burgundy dress.
Diamond earrings.
Smile sharp enough to cut ribbon.
“There you are.”
Her eyes moved to the folder.
Then to Mara.
“How dramatic.”
Mara said, “Celeste, this is a trust matter.”
Celeste laughed softly.
“You mean an inheritance tantrum.”
Richard said nothing.
Again.
Mara looked at him.
“Say something.”
He rubbed his forehead.
“This is not the time.”
“It is exactly the time.”
Celeste stepped closer.
“No, darling.”
“The time was before you came to my gala threatening your father with papers.”
Mara’s heart went still.
“Your gala?”
Celeste smiled.
“The hotel needs a hostess who understands elegance.”
Mara looked at Richard.
He looked at the floor.
That was when she knew.
He had already promised Celeste the announcement.
The public role.
The future.
Maybe not ownership.
Not legally.
But emotionally, he had given her the keys.
Mara whispered, “Mom built this place.”
Celeste’s smile thinned.
“And she is gone.”
The sentence landed like a blade.
Richard finally looked up.
“Celeste.”
But too softly.
Far too softly.
Mara turned toward the lobby.
She was done with the corridor.
Celeste followed her out and raised her voice in front of everyone.
“Security, remove her.”
