Chapter 10 - THE FAMILY LIAISON
The liaison was Captain Melissa Ward.
She had called the Cole house after the convoy attack to inform Emma that Ethan was alive but temporarily unreachable.
Diane answered.
She said Emma was sleeping after a difficult night with the baby.
Melissa should have requested Emma directly.
Instead, Diane described herself as Ethan’s mother and household caregiver. She answered identity questions using information taken from military letters.
During the call, Melissa used the family authentication phrase.
Diane wrote it down.
Melissa had not joined the fraud intentionally.
Her failure came from ignoring protocol because Diane sounded calm and informed.
That single mistake helped Richard create convincing false documents.
Melissa reported herself when investigators contacted her.
“I thought I was reassuring his family.”
“You were speaking to my mother,” Ethan said. “You were supposed to speak to my wife.”
“I know.”
“Did Richard contact you later?”
“Yes.”
Melissa admitted that Richard called twice seeking updates. She refused to provide operational details but confirmed Ethan’s original return window.
That information helped the family schedule the refinance review and custody filing.
Melissa faced an internal investigation.
Ethan felt no satisfaction.
The scheme had not required a vast network.
It required a series of people choosing convenience over verification.
A notary accepted cash.
A lawyer trusted a client with money.
A liaison trusted a confident voice.
A bank trusted altered paper.
Each small failure gave Richard another weapon.
At the hospital, Noah was cleared for discharge.
Emma needed another night of observation because circulation in two toes remained weak.
Ethan carried Noah through the corridor while Emma watched from a wheelchair.
The child wore a knitted cap donated by a nurse and slept beneath the pink blanket.
For the first time since the driveway, Ethan allowed himself to imagine taking them somewhere safe.
The house remained a crime scene.
An on-base family apartment was made available temporarily.
Emma agreed on one condition.
“No one receives a key unless we both approve.”
Ethan nodded.
“No one.”
Mara returned with news about the missing originals.
Travis Bell had been found at Richard’s hunting cabin. He was alive, frightened, and willing to cooperate.
Diane had instructed him to remove the military files and Noah’s account papers. She planned to destroy the originals and claim all disputed documents were copies created by Emma.
Travis hid instead.
He brought police to a locked safe beneath the cabin floor.
Inside were the original deed, the limited power of attorney, and a handwritten ledger of every fraudulent payment.
There was also a sealed envelope addressed to Kyle.
The letter instructed him to blame Richard if the plan failed.
Diane wrote:
Your father understands force but not law. Let him take the criminal blame. We will preserve the accounts through you.
Kyle had not been merely protected by his mother.
He had been selected as the person who would retain whatever money remained after Richard’s arrest.
Mara confronted him.
Kyle began talking.
He revealed that Diane maintained another account under her maiden name. The $120,000 transfer was only the first deposit.
More than $300,000 had been routed there through Kyle’s company.
Diane planned to leave Richard once the house transfer became permanent.
Kyle would move with her and Noah.
“What about Ethan?” Mara asked.
