Chapter 5 - THE NOTARY AT MIDNIGHT
The fourth person was Linda Graves, a mobile notary who handled loan closings for several banks in the county.
She arrived at the house after midnight and left twenty-three minutes later.
The hidden footage showed her examining Ethan’s military identification copy, the original limited power of attorney, and the replacement authorization page.
“This page isn’t part of the same document,” she said.
Richard placed an envelope on the table.
“It was updated before he deployed.”
“He needs to appear by video.”
“He’s in a restricted location.”
Linda looked inside the envelope.
Then she stamped the papers.
Detective Mara arrested her at home before dawn.
Linda initially claimed she believed Ethan had approved the transaction through Richard. When investigators showed her the cash envelope and the timestamped footage, she requested an attorney.
The forged notarization transformed a family scheme into organized mortgage fraud.
Richard continued denying knowledge.
He said Linda must have misunderstood Kyle’s request.
Diane claimed Emma arranged the refinancing and later regretted it.
The satellite recordings made both stories impossible.
At the hospital, Ethan sat with Emma while a pediatric nurse placed Noah in her arms.
The baby remained under observation but no longer required oxygen. Emma held him against her chest and closed her eyes.
“He’s warm,” she whispered.
Ethan adjusted the blanket around them.
For a moment, the house, deed, and money disappeared.
Only the three of them remained.
Then Emma asked, “Did you know Richard disliked me?”
“I knew he thought I wasn’t good enough.”
“He said I trapped you with Noah.”
Ethan looked down.
His father had made similar comments before the wedding. Ethan dismissed them as bitterness.
Richard believed family loyalty meant obedience. Diane disguised the same demand as concern.
When Ethan deployed, he entrusted them with access to the house because he believed parenthood had softened them.
Instead, it gave them the authority they always wanted.
Emma described the months after Noah’s birth.
Diane criticized breastfeeding, sleeping arrangements, and medical appointments. She repeatedly suggested Emma suffered postpartum depression.
Richard began recording her whenever she cried.
Kyle edited one video to remove the argument that caused the tears.
The custody folder contained those clips on a flash drive.
A typed summary described Emma as emotionally volatile and incapable of protecting Noah.
Dr. Morgan reviewed Emma’s records.
“She was screened twice for postpartum depression,” the doctor said. “Both results were normal.”
Diane had included a third result in the folder.
It showed severe symptoms.
The signature belonged to a therapist Emma had never met.
The therapist’s office confirmed the form was counterfeit.
“They created a medical history,” Mara said. “Then staged the incident that would make it look real.”
Ethan watched a recovered living-room recording from the week before the blizzard.
Diane told Richard:
“If Emma refuses the deed, we use the baby.”
Richard answered:
“Ethan will choose his parents when he sees what she’s become.”
Kyle asked, “What if he believes her?”
Richard looked directly toward the covered camera, unaware it still recorded.
“Soldiers are trained to follow evidence. We’ll make sure the evidence belongs to us.”
Ethan paused the video.
His father understood exactly how he thought.
That was why Richard prepared documents, medical forms, and staged recordings.
He expected Ethan to return looking for facts.
He simply never expected the house to preserve its own.
Mara’s phone rang.
The bank had frozen the refinance account.
Only $36,000 remained.
Most of the money had already been transferred or withdrawn.
