Chapter 2 - THE SLAP THAT NEVER HAPPENED

Ethan carried Emma and Noah upstairs before playing the footage.
His old bedroom was the only room whose lock had not been changed. He placed Noah on the mattress and wrapped Emma in two blankets while calling emergency services through the satellite phone.
“Adult female, severe cold exposure,” he reported. “Six-month-old infant exposed to blizzard conditions. Possible assault and unlawful eviction.”
Richard shouted from downstairs.
“Do not bring police into this house!”
Ethan locked the bedroom door.
Emma’s fingers were too stiff to hold the warm towel he brought from the bathroom. He pressed it carefully around her hands.
“Stay with me.”
“I tried to keep him warm.”
“You did.”
“Noah stopped crying twice.”
The baby’s chest moved shallowly beneath the blanket.
Ethan could hear sirens in the distance when the encrypted feed completed its first download.
He placed the phone where Emma could see.
The hallway recording began at 3:17 that afternoon.
Emma stood near the front door with Noah against her chest. Diane blocked the exit.
“You are not taking our grandson,” Diane said.
“He has a fever. I’m taking him to urgent care.”
“You’ve already embarrassed this family enough.”
Richard entered carrying a folder.
He ordered Emma to sign a temporary guardianship document giving Diane control of Noah for six months.
Emma refused.
Kyle stepped behind her and removed her phone from the diaper bag.
“What are you doing?” Emma demanded.
“Keeping you from calling people who don’t understand family matters,” Richard replied.
Diane suddenly looked toward the covered camera.
Then she slapped herself across the cheek.
The sound was sharp.
She staggered backward and screamed.
“She hit me!”
Emma froze.
Kyle grabbed her arm while Richard opened the front door.
“You attacked my wife,” Richard said. “Get out.”
“I didn’t touch her.”
“You’re leaving before I call the sheriff.”
“You took my phone.”
Richard seized the diaper bag. Diane pulled Noah’s winter hat from inside and placed it on the table.
Emma moved toward the baby supplies.
Kyle blocked her.
Richard shoved her through the doorway wearing only socks.
Snow covered the porch.
Emma begged them to return Noah’s coat and formula.
Diane closed the door.
The recording continued.
Through the glass, Emma pounded on the entrance while shielding Noah inside her sweater.
Kyle asked, “How long are we leaving her there?”
Richard answered, “Until she signs.”
Diane touched the cheek she had slapped herself.
“And if she doesn’t?”
Richard looked toward the storm.
“She will when the baby starts getting cold.”
Emma began shaking beneath the blankets, though the bedroom was warm.
Ethan stared at the screen.
His parents had not lost control during an argument.
They had used the blizzard as leverage.
The front door downstairs opened again. Richard’s heavy footsteps climbed the stairs.
“Ethan, we need to talk before the police arrive.”
Ethan stood between the bedroom door and his family.
“You can talk through the wood.”
“Emma has been stealing from you.”
“She was trying to get Noah medical care.”
“She’s been planning to leave.”
Emma whispered, “Because I found the mortgage papers.”
Richard stopped speaking.
Ethan looked at her.
“What mortgage papers?”
Before Emma could answer, police lights swept across the bedroom ceiling.

Downstairs, Kyle ran toward the back door.
👉 The staged assault had been exposed, but Emma’s discovery of secret mortgage papers revealed why Richard needed her signature before Ethan came home.
