Chapter 17 - THE WOMAN WHO DIED THREE YEARS AGO

Evelyn’s Colorado grave contained no body.
The cemetery records showed a cremation arranged by Dr. Samuel Pierce. No relative identified the remains. The ashes had been delivered directly to Evelyn’s estate attorney.
The attorney admitted he never opened the urn.
“I believed privacy was one of her final wishes.”
Mara placed Evelyn’s recent library image in front of him.
“Your client is alive.”
The attorney studied the photograph.
Then he unlocked a drawer and surrendered a sealed envelope.
Ethan’s name appeared across the front.
The letter had arrived three days earlier.
Ethan,
If police have opened my grave, Richard’s oldest lie has finally begun to collapse. Do not confuse my guilt with innocence simply because he was worse. I made decisions about your life without asking your mother. I believed I could correct them later.
Dr. Pierce helped me disappear because Richard threatened to expose what happened after Anna’s crash.
You must find Kyle before Richard learns you know.
Ethan stopped reading.
Kyle sat across the temporary apartment with both hands clasped between his knees.
“Why me?”
Mara requested an emergency protective order preventing Richard, Diane or their attorneys from contacting him.
Kyle laughed bitterly.
“My parents are in jail.”
“They still have lawyers, investigators and access to people who believe they are protecting the family.”
“I helped them put Emma outside.”
“No one is forgetting that,” Ethan said. “But Evelyn believed you were connected to Anna’s crash.”
Kyle looked at him.
“I was born years after she died.”
“According to Diane.”
The brothers had never compared birth records.
Kyle’s certificate listed Diane as his mother and Richard as his father. His birth occurred seven months after Anna’s crash.
Diane’s prenatal file should have confirmed the pregnancy.
The hospital had no record of it.
Her insurance history contained no obstetric care, delivery charges or maternity admission.
The physician signing Kyle’s birth certificate was Samuel Pierce.
Kyle pushed the document away.
“No.”
Mara ordered independent DNA testing.
Kyle consented only after his attorney arrived.
The result established that Ethan and Kyle shared both parents.
They were full biological brothers.
Anna Hart Cole was Kyle’s mother.
Diane had raised him under a stolen maternity record.
Kyle left the room before anyone could stop him.
Ethan found him in the hallway gripping the metal railing.
“She told me I was the child who stayed,” Kyle said.
Ethan remained several feet away.
“What did that mean?”
“When I was young, Diane said your mother abandoned one son and she chose to raise the other.”
“She made you believe Anna rejected me.”
“She made me believe I was hers.”
Kyle struck the railing with his palm.
“All those times she said she understood me better than you because I came from her.”
“She knew the truth.”
“And Richard?”
“He had to.”
Kyle’s face collapsed.
He had participated in stealing Noah for the woman who had built her motherhood from another stolen child.
Understanding the pattern did not erase his choices.
It made them impossible to describe as isolated mistakes.
Mara questioned Diane without revealing the DNA result initially.
“Was Kyle born at St. Matthew’s Hospital?”
“Yes.”
“Which room?”
“I don’t remember.”
“How long was the labor?”
“Fourteen hours.”
“Who held him first?”
Diane hesitated.
“Richard.”
Mara placed the DNA report on the table.
Diane looked at it for less than a second.
Then she closed her eyes.
“Evelyn was supposed to take him.”
Kyle watched from another room.
Diane explained that Anna was six months pregnant when her car left the mountain road. Emergency crews took her to a rural hospital, where doctors delivered the baby while attempting to control internal bleeding.
Anna remained conscious long enough to name him Jacob.
Richard arrived before Evelyn.
He ordered Pierce to tell everyone the infant died.
“Why?” Mara asked.
“Because Anna wanted Evelyn to raise him.”
“So Richard took the baby.”
“He said both sons belonged with their father.”
“And you agreed to become the mother?”
Diane’s expression hardened.
“I kept that child alive.”
“You gave him another name.”
“I gave him a family.”
“You gave him a lie.”
Diane leaned toward the table.
“Do you think Anna could have raised him from a grave?”
“No. But Kyle had a right to know whose grave it was.”
Diane claimed Evelyn helped transfer the newborn from the rural hospital.
Evelyn believed she was taking him to a maternal relative.
Richard intercepted the ambulance and threatened Pierce’s medical license.
Diane signed the maternity papers.
Evelyn spent years searching for the baby without realizing Richard was raising him inside the same house as Ethan.
Kyle pressed both hands against his face.
“She visited us when I was a baby.”
Ethan remembered a woman Richard introduced as an insurance representative.
Evelyn had held Kyle near the fireplace.
Richard remained beside her the entire time.
She had touched the child she was searching for without knowing his name had been changed.
Mara’s phone rang.
Colorado police had located the vehicle used by Evelyn and Dr. Pierce.
It stood abandoned near an old mountain clinic.
Blood covered the passenger seat.
Inside the glove compartment officers found Kyle’s original hospital bracelet.
The name printed across it was not Jacob Cole.
It was:
BABY ANNA HART—MALE B.

The letter B suggested another infant had been delivered during the same emergency.
👉 Kyle learned he was Anna’s stolen son, but his original hospital bracelet indicated that his mother may have delivered two babies after the crash.
