Chapter 12 - the choice Lauren had to make

Daniel placed his hand on the first scanner without hesitation.
The machine accepted his identity.
PATERNAL CONSENT VERIFIED.
Lauren stood before the second scanner.
Everyone watched her.
Rourke smiled.
“She won’t do it.”
Lauren looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because termination exposes every financial transfer connected to Sentinel. Every false signature. Every stolen payment. Every choice you made.”
Daniel turned toward her.
“What is he talking about?”
Lauren’s face became pale.
Wade laughed from the floor.
“Tell him.”
“Quiet,” Lauren said.
“Tell your heroic husband how you met us.”
Daniel did not remove his hand from the scanner.
“Lauren?”
She looked at Emily.
“I borrowed money.”
“How much?”
“Eighty thousand dollars.”
Daniel stared at her.
“For what?”
“Joshua’s surgery.”
Their son had required a procedure as an infant. Daniel believed military insurance had covered it.
“The hospital said it was covered,” he said.
“It was supposed to be. The claim was denied while you were deployed.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“You were already in danger. You called home exhausted. I thought I could solve it.”
She had turned to Rebecca’s volunteer program.
Rebecca connected her to Wade.
Wade offered a loan.
Then came interest, forged documents, and threats.
“I signed access to your benefits,” Lauren continued. “I gave them account information. I thought I could repay everything before you came home.”
Daniel felt the depth of betrayal, but he also saw how the trap had been built.
“You helped them access my records.”
“Yes.”
“Did you give them my service number?”
“Yes.”
“That is how they forged my death.”
“I didn’t know what they planned.”
Emily stood inside the booth, listening.
Lauren’s voice broke.
“When I understood, I tried to leave. Wade said he would report me for financial fraud and take the children. He showed me photographs of Emily walking to school. He knew Joshua’s medical schedule.”
Rourke spoke calmly.
“If she authorizes termination, every record becomes public. She will be prosecuted.”
Lauren looked at Daniel.
“What happens to the children if we both go to prison?”
“You are not the only person who made illegal transfers,” Agent Ellison said.
“I signed them.”
“Under coercion.”
“Not at first.”
The admission hung between them.
At first, Lauren had chosen secrecy.
At first, she had believed she could control the lie.
Daniel understood why she hesitated.
Pressing the scanner could destroy Sentinel and expose Rourke. It could also destroy her chance to return to her children.
Emily touched the glass.
“Mommy.”
Lauren looked at her.
“Are you going away again?”
“No.”
“Then press it.”
Lauren began crying.
“I might be arrested.”
Emily’s voice was quiet.
“You already left us because you were scared.”
The words held no cruelty.
Only truth.
Lauren closed her eyes.
Then she placed her palm on the scanner.
MATERNAL CONSENT VERIFIED.
TERMINATION SEQUENCE INITIATED.
Rourke shouted and reached for his pistol.
Vance intercepted him.
The two officers fought across the command platform.
Morgan aimed at the central console.
“If Sentinel cannot be preserved, the witness cannot leave.”
Daniel moved toward her.
She fired.
Lauren pulled Emily down.
The bullet struck Daniel’s shoulder.
He staggered.
Max attacked Morgan, clamping onto her weapon arm. The pistol discharged into the ceiling.
Agent Ellison disarmed her.
Sentinel’s voice continued.
“Physical command core will deactivate in five minutes.”
Warning lights flashed.
Rourke threw Vance against the console and entered an override code.
“Command preservation authorized.”
The termination countdown froze.
Rourke smiled.
“You need both commanders to approve full shutdown.”
Vance pushed himself upright.
“I approve.”
He placed his hand on his station.
COMMAND CANDIDATE TWO CONSENT VERIFIED.
Everyone looked at Rourke.
The system required the man seeking control to consent to losing it.
He laughed.
“You built a perfect prison.”
Vance looked at Emily.
“The witness can revoke a commander.”
Emily examined the bracelet.
“How?”
“State why he is unfit.”
Rourke raised his weapon toward her.
Daniel stepped in front of the booth despite the blood running down his arm.
Emily spoke before Rourke could fire.
“Thomas Rourke uses soldiers to hurt children. He lies about protecting people. He wants everyone afraid so they obey him.”
The bracelet illuminated.
WITNESS TESTIMONY ACCEPTED.
Rourke’s command station locked around his wrist.
A restraint snapped over his arm.
COMMAND AUTHORITY REVOKED.
The termination countdown resumed.
Rourke screamed in rage.
“You have no idea what is coming!”
Daniel looked at him.
“What?”
“Sentinel was not built only to command our systems.”
A global map appeared.
Dozens of lights activated across Europe, Asia, and the Pacific.
Vance’s face went white.
“These are foreign continuity networks.”
Rourke smiled again.
“They have been waiting for Sentinel to wake.”
The system announced:
EXTERNAL HANDSHAKE REQUESTS: 37.
TERMINATION WILL TRIGGER RECIPROCAL RESPONSE.
Daniel stared at the map.
Destroying Sentinel might activate similar systems around the world.
Emily looked at the final confirmation button.
“Daddy?”
Before Daniel could answer, one external network accepted the handshake by itself.
Its location appeared beneath the northern Atlantic.
The identification field read:
