Chapter 2 - the man with Lauren’s key

Daniel positioned himself between the kitchen door and his children.

“Identify yourself.”

The stranger held up a leather badge case.

“Deputy Wade Mercer, Clarke County Sheriff’s Office.”

Daniel studied the badge through the glass. It looked authentic, but the man wore no uniform and drove an unmarked sedan.

The woman beside him raised the folder.

“Angela Pike, family placement coordinator.”

Emily made a frightened sound behind Daniel.

Max barked harder.

Wade glanced at the dog.

“You need to control that animal.”

“He is under control.”

“He looks ready to come through the glass.”

“He knows who belongs here.”

Wade’s smile disappeared.

Daniel kept the kitchen door locked.

“Why are you at my house?”

Angela opened the folder and displayed several documents against the window.

“We have authorization to remove the minor children from this residence.”

Daniel’s pulse slowed rather than quickened. Combat had taught him that fear became useful when reduced to information.

“On what grounds?”

“Abandonment, unsafe living conditions, and lack of a legal guardian.”

“I’m their father.”

Angela looked at Wade.

Wade reached into his jacket and produced a folded page.

“According to the records supplied to the county, Staff Sergeant Daniel Reed died during an overseas training incident eleven days ago.”

Emily began crying.

Daniel did not turn around.

“I am standing in front of you.”

“Apparently,” Wade said.

“Call my command.”

“We already received confirmation.”

“That is impossible.”

Wade lifted his phone and showed Daniel an email bearing the seal of Daniel’s unit. The message listed his full name, service number, and an official date of death.

Daniel recognized the signature at the bottom.

Lieutenant Colonel Aaron Vance.

His commanding officer.

Daniel had spoken to Vance three days earlier.

“Open the door,” Wade said. “We can resolve this without upsetting the children further.”

Emily clutched Daniel’s uniform.

“Don’t let him in.”

Wade heard her.

His eyes shifted toward the child with a familiarity Daniel did not like.

“Emily, your aunt is waiting for you.”

“I don’t have an aunt here,” Emily whispered.

Angela looked down at her documents.

“Temporary placement was granted to Rebecca Mercer.”

Wade’s sister.

Daniel understood why the surname had felt familiar. Lauren had once mentioned a Rebecca from a local volunteer group. She had described her as helpful, generous, and connected to the sheriff’s department.

“Where is my wife?” Daniel asked.

Wade’s expression remained smooth.

“Lauren left the county voluntarily.”

“With you?”

Angela glanced sharply at him.

Wade’s jaw tightened.

“I suggest you watch your accusations.”

“I asked a question.”

“You should focus on proving who you are.”

Daniel removed his military identification and held it against the glass.

Wade barely looked at it.

“Documents can be stolen.”

“Then call Fort Meade.”

“We will handle verification after the children are secured.”

Daniel saw the trap. Once Emily and Joshua were removed, getting them back could take days or weeks. The forged death report, the unsafe house, and his sudden appearance would create confusion long enough for someone to bury the truth.

He looked toward Angela.

“Did you personally inspect this home before approving placement?”

“No.”

“Did you speak with my children?”

“No.”

“Did you verify that they had been abandoned?”

“I relied on the sheriff’s report.”

“Written by him?”

She hesitated.

Wade stepped closer to the door.

“This is over.”

He reached into his pocket and withdrew a key.

Lauren’s brass house key.

Daniel recognized the blue plastic cover Emily had decorated with a silver star.

Wade inserted it into the lock.

Daniel placed one hand on Max’s collar.

The key turned halfway, then stopped because Daniel had engaged the deadbolt.

Emily whispered, “He came before.”

Daniel looked back at her.

“When?”

“The night Mommy left.”

Wade struck the door with his palm.

“Open it now.”

Daniel’s voice became cold.

“You possessed my wife’s key on the night she disappeared, and now you are attempting to remove my children using a report that falsely declares me dead.”

Angela lowered her folder.

“Wade, is that her key?”

“It was surrendered as evidence.”

“Evidence of what?”

Wade ignored her.

He drew his phone.

“I’m requesting backup.”

Daniel pulled out his own phone. It had no signal.

The kitchen lights flickered.

Emily pointed toward the hallway.

“Daddy, the bedroom.”

The locked door trembled.

A soft mechanical vibration came from behind it.

Not movement.

A phone ringing against wood.

Daniel looked at Wade.

The deputy’s face changed.

For the first time, he seemed genuinely alarmed.

“Do not open that room,” Wade said.

“Why?”

“It was sealed during an active investigation.”

“There is no seal on it.”

Wade drew the silver object from beneath his jacket.

It was a pistol.

Angela stepped away from him.

“Wade, what are you doing?”

“Staff Sergeant Reed is emotionally unstable and refusing a lawful order.”

Daniel moved the children behind the kitchen island.

Max crouched at his side.

“Put the weapon away.”

“Unlock the door.”

The hidden phone continued ringing.

Emily looked up at Daniel.

“Mommy told me never to answer it unless you came home.”

Daniel’s blood went cold.

“Did she leave it for me?”

Emily nodded.

Wade raised the pistol.

“Step away from the hallway.”

A second engine roared onto the property.

This time, a marked sheriff’s cruiser stopped outside.

Wade smiled again.

But the kitchen phone rang before his backup reached the porch.

The caller identification screen displayed one name.

LAUREN REED.

👉 Lauren’s phone was ringing from inside the locked bedroom, even though Wade insisted she had left Virginia weeks earlier.
