Chapter 9 - the bracelet on Emily’s wrist

Daniel reached the sanctuary as a stained-glass window shattered.

Captain Morgan had overturned a pew and positioned Emily and Joshua behind it. One FBI agent lay wounded near the entrance. The second returned fire toward armed men outside.

Max raced across the sanctuary and threw himself over the children.

Emily wrapped both arms around him.

“Daddy!”

Daniel slid behind the pew.

“Are you hurt?”

She shook her head.

Joshua buried his face in Morgan’s shoulder.

A bullet struck the pulpit.

Daniel looked toward the side aisle.

“There’s a door behind the choir room.”

Morgan nodded.

“The exterior team has it covered.”

“Not for long.”

Agent Ellison and Vance emerged from the basement with Lauren between them.

Emily saw her mother.

For a moment, the gunfire disappeared from her face.

“Mommy?”

Lauren moved toward her.

Emily backed away.

The reaction stopped Lauren more effectively than any accusation.

“I’m sorry,” Lauren whispered.

Emily touched the small steel bracelet around her wrist.

Daniel had not noticed it beneath the sleeve of her dirty sweater.

Rebecca entered from the basement carrying a pistol.

Agent Ellison turned, but Rebecca fired first.

The bullet struck Vance in the side.

He fell against the pulpit.

Daniel pulled Emily down as Rebecca aimed toward them.

Max charged.

Rebecca fired again.

The shot missed the dog and shattered a hymn-board frame.

Max struck her chest, knocking her to the floor. Ellison kicked the pistol away and handcuffed her.

Rebecca stared at Lauren.

“You ruined everything.”

Lauren looked at the woman who had pretended to help her.

“You chose mothers who were desperate.”

“I gave them choices.”

“You stole their children.”

“I placed the children where they would be useful.”

Emily heard.

She looked down at Joshua.

Daniel covered her ears, but too late.

Outside, the armed men began retreating. FBI reinforcements were approaching from the highway.

The sanctuary became quiet except for Joshua’s sobbing and Vance’s labored breathing.

Captain Morgan applied pressure to his wound.

“You need surgery.”

Vance grabbed Daniel’s sleeve.

“Rourke has the other two keys.”

“You said you carried one.”

“He took it in the orchard.”

“When?”

“Before you arrived. I gave him a counterfeit, but he may have discovered it by now.”

“What about the property-deed key?”

“Wade delivered it.”

Daniel looked at Rebecca.

“Where is your brother?”

She smiled.

“You think Wade worked for me.”

“Didn’t he?”

“We both worked for someone else.”

“Rourke?”

Her smile widened.

“Rourke believes he is the highest authority in the room.”

Agent Ellison pulled her upright.

“Who gave the orders?”

Rebecca looked toward Lauren.

“She knows.”

Lauren’s face went pale.

Daniel turned.

“Who?”

“I never saw him.”

“You heard him?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

Lauren looked at Emily’s bracelet.

“He called it Daniel’s inheritance.”

Vance began coughing.

“Rourke’s people will move toward the orchard. Once they have all three keys, Sentinel can be activated.”

Daniel removed the bracelet from Emily’s wrist.

She grabbed his hand.

“Mommy said never take it off.”

“I need to keep it safe.”

“No.”

Her refusal surprised everyone.

Emily’s eyes filled with tears, but her voice stayed firm.

“Everybody wants it. Max protected me because I had it. If you take it, they’ll chase you.”

“They are already chasing us.”

“Then we shouldn’t give it to any grown-up.”

Daniel looked at his nine-year-old daughter.

For forty-three nights, adults had lied, disappeared, forged documents, and traded her life for power. Her distrust was earned.

“You’re right,” he said. “But I need to understand it.”

He examined the bracelet.

Inside the clasp was a narrow groove. He pressed it with his thumbnail.

A tiny strip of metal unfolded, revealing engraved letters.

NOT COMMAND.

WITNESS.

Vance saw them.

His expression changed.

“Your father altered the key.”

“What does ‘witness’ mean?”

“I don’t know.”

Rebecca began laughing.

“He never told you.”

“Tell me.”

“Sentinel does not need three commanders,” she said. “It needs two commanders and one witness.”

“What does the witness do?”

“Chooses which commander survives.”

Emily moved closer to Daniel.

Vance stared at the bracelet.

“Your father designed a human veto.”

Agent Ellison’s phone rang.

She answered, listened, and looked toward Daniel.

“Wade Mercer was found alive.”

“Where?”

“Inside Mrs. Kline’s farmhouse.”

Emily stiffened.

“Is she okay?”

Ellison did not answer immediately.

“Mrs. Kline is dead.”

Emily began shaking.

Daniel held her.

Max pressed himself against her legs.

“Wade left a message written on the wall,” Ellison continued.

“What message?”

“He said the witness must come to the orchard before midnight, or Sentinel will choose without her.”

Daniel looked at the bracelet.

The engraving did not identify him as the witness.

It identified the person wearing it.

May you like

Emily.

👉 Daniel discovered that his nine-year-old daughter was not merely carrying the final key—she had been designated to decide who would control Sentinel and who would be destroyed by it.
