Chapter 8 - beneath Covenant Grace

Daniel descended first.

Agent Ellison followed with her weapon drawn. Two FBI agents remained with Captain Morgan and the children in the sanctuary, but Emily refused to let Max stay behind.

The dog slipped past them and followed Daniel into the dark.

The stairs ended in a concrete corridor that smelled of bleach and damp earth. Fluorescent lights buzzed overhead. Doors lined both sides, each fitted with an electronic lock.

This was not a church basement.

It was a detention site.

Daniel looked through the first narrow window.

The room contained a cot, a camera, and plastic restraints.

Empty.

The second room held women’s clothing sorted into clear bags. The third contained filing cabinets labeled with names and dates.

Agent Ellison photographed everything.

“Rebecca’s volunteer group placed women in emergency housing,” she whispered. “Abuse survivors, military spouses, women facing custody disputes.”

“She selected people no one would immediately believe.”

“And transferred their benefits.”

Max ran ahead.

Daniel followed him to a steel door at the end of the corridor.

Lauren screamed again.

“Daniel!”

He struck the lock with the butt of Ellison’s weapon.

The reinforced frame held.

Ellison found a keypad.

“Four digits.”

Daniel thought of the numbers Lauren had hidden in the toy soldier. The last four coordinates were 1-9-8-6.

He entered them.

The lock opened.

Lauren sat tied to a chair beneath a hanging light.

She wore the same clothes from the motel photograph. Bruises marked her arms. Her face was pale, but she was alive.

Lieutenant Colonel Vance stood behind her with a pistol.

Daniel aimed Ellison’s weapon at him.

“Step away.”

Vance raised one hand.

“Close the door.”

“Drop the gun.”

“Rourke has access to the cameras.”

“Drop it.”

Vance placed the pistol on the floor and kicked it away.

Daniel crossed the room and cut Lauren’s restraints.

She collapsed against him.

For one second, anger disappeared beneath relief.

He held her.

Then he remembered the children alone for forty-three nights.

He stepped back.

“Why didn’t you go home?”

Lauren began crying.

“I tried.”

Vance closed the door and disconnected the camera.

“We have minutes before Rebecca returns.”

Ellison entered behind Daniel.

“Colonel Vance, you are under investigation for falsifying a casualty report, kidnapping, fraud, and conspiracy.”

“I did not file the report.”

“Your credentials did.”

“Rourke cloned them.”

Daniel faced him.

“My wife heard you say, ‘Take her to the car.’”

“I was extracting her from Wade.”

“Why hide her?”

“Because Wade had local law enforcement, family services, and a judge under his control.”

“Then why leave my children?”

Vance looked at Lauren.

She answered.

“I believed Mrs. Kline had them.”

“You did not verify?”

“Wade took my phone. Vance said sending anyone to the house would expose the children’s location.”

“They were already in the house.”

Lauren covered her mouth.

“I thought Rebecca had moved them.”

Daniel’s anger returned.

“You believed the woman whose brother threatened you?”

“I was terrified.”

“So was Emily.”

Lauren flinched.

“She kept Joshua alive.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“She carried him on her back because he cried whenever she put him down. She fed Max scraps. She swept the floor because she thought you would come home if the house looked clean.”

Lauren sank against the wall.

“I failed them.”

Vance looked toward the corridor.

“We can discuss blame after we survive.”

Daniel turned on him.

“You do not decide that.”

“No, but Rourke knows we are here.”

Agent Ellison searched the room.

“What is beneath the Reed property?”

Vance’s expression tightened.

“A dormant command system built to survive a nuclear decapitation strike. Sentinel Hearth could assume temporary control of military communications if normal command failed.”

“Why does Rourke want it?”

“He believes civilian leadership has compromised national security. He plans to activate a private continuity network under his control.”

“Military coup?” Ellison asked.

“Not openly. He would create regional failures, then present Sentinel Hearth as the only stable command channel.”

Daniel thought of the forged death record.

“Why target my family?”

“Your father changed the system before he died. He removed remote access and created three physical authorization keys.”

“Where are they?”

“One was hidden in your property deed. Wade obtained it through the fraudulent transfer.”

“Second?”

“Your father gave it to me.”

“And the third?”

Vance looked at Daniel.

“You carry it.”

Daniel checked his uniform, pockets, identification tags.

“I don’t.”

“You do. Your father embedded it in the metal identification bracelet you wore as a child.”

Daniel remembered the bracelet—a small stainless-steel band engraved with his name and blood type. Lauren had stored it in their bedroom.

Wade had searched the room.

“Where is it now?”

Lauren whispered, “Emily has it.”

Daniel stared at her.

“I gave it to her the night I left. I told her it was protection.”

Footsteps sounded in the corridor.

Max growled.

A woman’s voice came through the door.

“Lauren, I know Daniel is with you.”

Rebecca Mercer.

Vance picked up his pistol.

Ellison moved beside the door.

Rebecca continued.

“My brother is missing. General Rourke is angry. Give us the bracelet, and the children remain unharmed.”

Daniel felt the words like ice.

The children were upstairs.

Gunfire erupted in the sanctuary.

Max launched himself toward the stairs.

👉 Rebecca had discovered that Emily carried the final Sentinel key, and the gunfire above meant Rourke’s people had already reached Daniel’s children.
