Chapter 4

Arthur Bennett did not wait until the mourners left.

That was how confident he was.

The grave had only just been covered. The priest’s final words still hung in the humid Savannah air. Relatives were wiping tears. White flowers leaned gently in the overcast wind.

Arthur checked his watch.

Then looked toward Vanessa near the black SUV.

She wore elegant black funeral clothing and dark glasses, but impatience showed in her posture.

Charles saw the glance.

So did Lucy.

Arthur cleared his throat.

“I have an announcement.”

Charles turned slowly.

This was not how a widower spoke at his wife’s grave.

Arthur gestured toward the girls.

“I can’t raise them. I won’t pretend otherwise. Arrangements are being made.”

Lucy’s grip tightened around the portrait.

Rachel buried her face in Charles’s coat.

April began to shake.

“What arrangements?” Charles asked.

Arthur’s voice grew sharper.

“They’re going into foster care. I deserve a fresh start.”

A woman in the back gasped.

Someone said, “At the funeral?”

Vanessa shifted near the SUV, not shocked enough.

That told Charles she had known.

Maybe not every detail.

But enough.

Charles stepped forward, placing himself between Arthur and the girls.

“You abandoned them in front of two hundred witnesses.”

Arthur’s eyes narrowed.

“They’re not your children.”

“They are Rose’s children.”

“And Rose is gone.”

The sentence cut through the cemetery.

For one second, Charles nearly lost control.

Then Lucy moved.

Small.

Steady.

She pulled the sealed envelope from behind the portrait.

Arthur’s expression changed before she even lifted the phone.

That was when Charles knew.

Rose had not merely suspected.
