Chapter 6

Vanessa Cole had imagined a different ending.
That was clear from her face.
She had stood near the SUV like a woman waiting for an uncomfortable ceremony to finish so real life could begin.
Fresh start.
Arthur had used those words for both of them.
He told Vanessa the girls would be handled.
He said Rose’s family was difficult.
He said Charles was controlling.
He said Lucy was dramatic, Rachel was needy, and April was too young to remember much.
Vanessa had accepted those descriptions because they made her future easier.
Then Lucy played the recording.
Rose’s voice changed everything.
Arthur threatened me for the insurance.
The proof is with the girls.
Vanessa’s confidence vanished.
She looked toward Arthur as if seeing a stranger inside the suit of the man she planned to marry.
Arthur shouted, “That’s edited!”
No one believed him immediately.
That frightened him.
A liar survives when doubt arrives first.
Here, doubt came late.
Too many witnesses had heard his foster-care declaration.
Too many had seen him lunge toward the child holding the phone.
Too many had watched Vanessa wait by the SUV like she already knew the daughters were obstacles to be removed.
Detective Miller approached Lucy slowly.
He did not snatch the phone.
He crouched just enough to make his voice gentle.
“Lucy, may I take that and keep it safe?”
Lucy looked at Charles.
Charles nodded.
Lucy handed it over.
Grant placed the phone into an evidence pouch.
Then took the sealed envelope and Rachel’s notebook with gloved hands.
He did not open them.
That restraint mattered.
The proof would not become gossip beside Rose’s grave.
May you like
It would become record.
