Chapter 5

Detective Grant Miller had attended the funeral unofficially.

Not as a guest.

Not as family.

As a precaution.

Charles had called him the night before after Lucy mentioned the hidden items.

Grant was an old friend of Rose’s cousin and had handled enough domestic financial cases to understand timing.

He told Charles not to open anything at home.

“Bring it sealed,” Grant said. “Let the chain begin clean.”

Charles hated the phrase.

Chain.

Evidence.

Procedure.

Words too cold for a daughter’s funeral.

But Rose had clearly wanted protection, not sentiment.

So Charles obeyed.

He kept Detective Miller nearby.

He told no one.

Not Arthur.

Not Rose’s sisters.

Not even the girls, except to say, “If your mother told you to wait, wait until the moment comes.”

The moment came when Arthur said foster care.

Lucy stepped forward half a pace.

Her hands trembled, but her voice stayed clear.

“Mom said to play this if Dad tried to get rid of us.”

Arthur’s face went white.

Not angry first.

White.

That was the face of a man recognizing a trap built by someone he believed too weak to set one.

Vanessa removed her sunglasses slowly.

The phone looked tiny in Lucy’s hand.

Too tiny to hold a dead woman’s warning.

Then Rose’s voice played.

“Arthur threatened me for the insurance. The proof is with the girls.”

Several mourners began crying instantly.

Others turned toward Arthur.

A police officer moved closer.

Arthur lunged toward Lucy, but the officers caught him before he reached her.

Charles pulled the girls behind him.

The recording ended.

But its silence was louder than the funeral had ever been.
