Chapter 8

Arthur tried to regain control with outrage.
“This is grief manipulation,” he snapped. “They’re children. They don’t understand what they’re doing.”
Lucy lifted her chin.
“I understand you said you didn’t want us.”
The cemetery went still again.
Arthur looked away first.
That small defeat mattered to Charles.
For a man like Arthur, shame was not caused by harming children.
It was caused by being seen.
Detective Miller turned toward Arthur.
“Mr. Bennett, step back.”
“I’m their father.”
“You are not approaching them.”
Arthur looked toward the SUV.
Vanessa looked away.
Another officer quietly moved near the open door, blocking it without force.
Vanessa noticed.
Her breathing changed.
She had been ready to leave.
Maybe with Arthur.
Maybe without him.
Now even the vehicle felt watched.
Charles stood slowly, still keeping the girls behind him.
“You will not decide their future beside their mother’s grave.”
Arthur sneered.
“You don’t have legal authority.”
“No,” Charles said. “Not here. Not yet.”
Arthur smiled as if that helped him.
Charles continued, “But I have two hundred witnesses, Rose’s recording, and three girls who will not be taken by the man their mother warned them about.”
The smile disappeared.
Detective Miller sealed the evidence pouch.
He did not announce what would happen next.
No custody decision.
No arrest.
No courtroom promise.
Only preservation.
Only boundaries.
