Chapter 7

Elena stopped so sharply that the traveler behind her almost collided with her suitcase.

She turned.

Noah was running toward her in his charcoal suit and black overcoat, face pale, hair disheveled, eyes wide with fear he could no longer hide.

She dropped the suitcase handle.

He crashed into her arms.

For one second, they were not in an airport.

Not in the shadow of Victor Hale.

Not surrounded by cameras, guards, police, and strangers dragging carry-ons toward distant gates.

They were mother and son.

Noah shook against her.

Elena held him tightly, one hand against the back of his head.

His phone was raised beside her shoulder as though he were pretending to make a farewell call.

Smart boy.

Her heart broke again, but differently this time.

Noah pressed his mouth near her ear.

“Dad threatened Grandma. I had to betray you.”

Elena’s face changed.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Her grief became immediate understanding.

“Is she alive?” Elena whispered.

Noah nodded against her shoulder.

“For now. He said he’d review her care.”

Elena closed her eyes.

Victor had touched the one person outside the courtroom Elena could not protect instantly.

Noah continued, words rushing now.

“I copied what I could. Not everything. Enough. I think enough.”

“Where?”

He slipped something into her coat pocket.

The black titanium card.

Then he closed her fingers around a small key.

“There’s sixty million on the card. His evidence is in Locker 317.”

Elena did not look down.

She did not expose the card.

She did not ask what evidence.

Not there.

Not in the open.

Behind Noah, men entered the terminal.

Victor’s driver.

Two private security guards.

Then Victor himself, moving fast with police officers behind him.

Noah stepped back.

His face went blank again.

The performance returned.
