Chapter 8

Victor saw the embrace.
That was enough to break his perfect face.
Not completely.
Not for strangers.
But Elena saw the collapse begin.
A tightening around the mouth.
A flash of rage in the eyes.
A calculation that arrived too late.
He walked toward them with the confidence of a man accustomed to making public spaces bend around him.
Police officers followed several steps behind, not rushing, not arresting anyone, only responding to whatever story Victor had given them.
Private security moved faster.
Elena placed herself slightly between Noah and the approaching men.
Noah shook his head almost imperceptibly.
Don’t.
She understood.
If she fought for him there, Victor would claim she was unstable, desperate, interfering with the custody order.
So she did not grab him.
She did not expose him.
She did not reveal the card.
Victor stopped close enough for her to see the anger beneath his restraint.
“Elena,” he said, smiling for nearby witnesses. “Still creating scenes?”
She looked at him calmly.
“No scene.”
His eyes moved to Noah.
“You were told to wait in the car.”
Noah lowered his gaze.

The obedience was perfect.
Too perfect.
Victor looked back at Elena.
“What did he say?”
Elena tilted her head.
“He said goodbye.”
Victor studied her face.
He knew her too well to believe that.
But he did not know what she had.
He did not know about the card in her pocket.
He did not know about the key pressed into her palm.
He did not know his son had reached her first.
A boarding announcement echoed somewhere above them.
Elena did not move toward security.
She looked past Victor, toward the hallway that led away from the gates.
Toward the lockers.
Victor followed her glance.
May you like
His confidence faltered.
