Chapter 9

Noah walked back toward Victor because he had to.
Every step cut Elena.
But she let him go.
His shoulders were rigid beneath the black overcoat. His hands were empty now. His phone held no visible secret. His face had become the cold mask from court.
Victor placed one hand on his son’s shoulder.
Possessive.
Public.
Noah did not flinch.
That hurt Elena most.
A child should not have to become that still.
One of the officers glanced toward Elena.
“Ma’am, is everything all right?”
Elena looked at him.
“Yes.”
Victor smiled.
“My son was emotional. Divorce is difficult.”
Elena almost laughed.
The lie was so smooth it sounded rehearsed because it was.
Noah stared at the floor.
Elena kept her hand inside her coat pocket, fingers around the card and key.
Locker 317.
Sixty million.
Evidence.
She did not know what the files contained.
She did not know what Noah had copied.
She did not know what waited behind the locker door.
And she did not know whether Victor’s threat against Grace was already in motion.
But she knew where to begin.
Victor leaned slightly toward her.
“You should board your flight.”
Elena looked at him.
For the first time that day, her tears were gone.
“I changed my mind.”
His eyes sharpened.
“Elena.”
She turned away from the departure gate.
Noah’s head lifted just enough to see.
Not a smile.
Not relief.
But a breath.
The smallest sign that he had done what he came to do.
Elena walked toward the terminal corridor.
Victor did not follow immediately.
Because following would reveal fear.
May you like
And Victor Hale had built an empire on never letting anyone see fear until it was too late.
