Chapter 1 - THE SHOVE EVERYONE SAW The baby blanket was still lying beside the scanner when Evan shoved Claire into the checkout counter.

Her stomach struck the metal edge first.
Pain exploded through her abdomen, sharp enough to steal her breath. She reached for the counter, missed, and collapsed onto the tile with both arms wrapping instinctively around her eight-month pregnancy.
For one terrible second, the bright grocery store disappeared.
There was only pressure.
Then silence inside her body where her baby had been moving moments earlier.
Evan stood above her, red-faced and furious.
“You greedy bitch! We’re not wasting my money on useless baby junk!”
The checkout lane froze.
Olivia, the young cashier, held a package of diapers halfway above the scanner. A woman waiting in the next lane covered her mouth. Several customers turned toward the commotion.
Claire pressed both palms against her belly.
“Move,” she whispered.
Nothing.
Evan leaned closer.
“Get up. Stop making a scene.”
The store manager reached them before Evan could grab her.
Marcus Reed stepped between them and drove one arm across Evan’s chest.
“Let go of her.”
“I didn’t touch her.”
“You shoved her into my counter.”
“This is a private family matter!”
Marcus seized the collar of Evan’s jacket and forced him backward.
“Not after you assaulted her in front of thirty witnesses.”
Olivia grabbed the store phone with trembling fingers.
A male customer near the candy display raised his cellphone and began recording. Another woman knelt beside Claire without touching her.
“I’m Leah. I’m a labor-and-delivery nurse. Can you hear me?”
Claire nodded weakly.
“Has the baby moved?”
Claire searched her abdomen again.
“No.”
Leah’s expression changed.
“Call 911 now. Tell them possible abdominal trauma and reduced fetal movement.”
Evan’s polished confidence cracked.
“I barely pushed her.”
The customer filming stepped closer.
“You drove her into the counter.”
“You don’t know what happened before you started recording.”
“I started recording before you touched her.”
That frightened Evan.
Marcus tightened his grip while Olivia relayed the emergency to the dispatcher.
Claire stared at the baby blanket beside the scanner. It was pale blue, covered in tiny silver stars. She had chosen it because she wanted one thing for the baby that had not been selected, priced, criticized, or approved by Evan.
He had seen the price and erupted.
The blanket cost twenty-eight dollars.
Claire’s hospital bills would cost thousands.
Her child’s life might cost everything.
Sirens approached beyond the automatic doors.
Leah looked up at Evan—and went completely still.
“I know you.”
Evan stared at her.
“No, you don’t.”
Leah rose slowly.
“You were married to Rachel Mercer.”
The color drained from his face.
Marcus glanced between them.
“Who is Rachel Mercer?”
Leah’s voice hardened.
“My patient. Five years ago. She came into St. Anne’s after her husband claimed she fell down the stairs.”
Evan tried to wrench free.
Marcus slammed him against the side of the checkout counter.
Leah looked directly at Claire.
“Rachel lost her baby that night.”
Paramedics rushed through the doors with a stretcher. As they lifted Claire, her phone slipped from her coat pocket.
Evan lunged toward it.
The filming customer blocked him with one arm.
Claire saw the panic in her husband’s eyes.
Not concern for her.
Fear of what the phone contained.
Then, just before the ambulance doors closed, Claire felt one faint movement inside her abdomen.
A weak flutter.
Her baby was still alive.
But Leah climbed into the ambulance beside her and whispered the sentence Claire would remember forever.
