She refused an in-person meeting but agreed to a recorded video call after consulting Nora and Detective Lena.
He appeared from detention wearing county-issued clothing. The confidence from the supermarket was gone.
The entitlement remained.
“You think I wanted to hurt the baby.”
“You shoved me stomach-first into metal.”
“I lost control.”
“You threatened me before you did it.”
“I was under pressure.”
“So was I. I didn’t assault anyone.”
Evan leaned closer to the camera.
“Elaine would have destroyed all of us.”
“You chose to help her.”
“I chose to protect my family.”
“You mean your mother’s company.”
“My mother built everything from nothing.”
“With money stolen from Rachel and me.”
Evan’s jaw tightened.
He offered evidence against Elaine, Sylvia, and Victor if Claire publicly described the assault as an accident. He believed reducing the violent charge would make prosecutors more willing to negotiate the financial case.
“You still think my words exist to save you,” Claire said.
“I am Oliver’s father.”
“You used his life as leverage before he was born.”
“I can help protect him from Elaine.”
“You are one of the dangers he needs protection from.”
Evan’s mask broke.
“You would have nothing without me.”
Claire almost laughed.
She had survived him.
Oliver had survived him.
The trust belonged to them despite him.
“You confused being present with being necessary.”
She ended the call.
Evan’s evidence arrived anyway.
He gave investigators access to a secret Northbridge account where Elaine stored contingency plans.
One folder concerned the supermarket witnesses.
Marcus was to be discredited through an old workplace complaint.
Olivia would be offered tuition money to alter her statement.
Caleb would face a fabricated accusation that he edited the video for publicity.
Leah’s nursing license would be challenged using falsified medication records.
Rachel would receive threats involving tax fraud.
Northbridge did not merely plan the event.
It planned to erase every credible witness afterward.
The exposure came too quickly for those attacks to begin.
Another folder contained a schedule titled INFANT TRANSFER—PHASE THREE.
Victor claimed he had never seen it.
The plan required a temporary evacuation of the NICU, a copied nurse credential, and a transport incubator.
Elaine had prepared to remove Oliver physically if the false-twin claim failed.
Security tightened immediately.
No one entered the NICU without two-person verification.
Nora remained beside Claire.
Marcus, Olivia, Caleb, Leah, and Rachel gave formal statements under protection.
The people Evan expected to silence became the foundation of the case.
Then the hospital fire alarm activated.
No smoke appeared.
The alarm originated from a manual switch beside the loading dock.
NICU staff followed emergency protocol but did not move Oliver until security confirmed the danger.
A woman in a transport uniform arrived with an incubator and forged evacuation orders.
She fled when challenged.
The incubator was abandoned.
Inside lay the pale blue baby blanket from the supermarket evidence room.
