Chapter 6 - THE BLANKET IN EVIDENCE The pale blue baby blanket remained inside a police evidence bag.
At first, investigators preserved it only because it lay beside the scanner during the assault. Then Olivia remembered something unusual.
Claire had not taken the blanket from the shelf herself.
A woman near the infant section handed it to her.
“She said it had fallen from Claire’s cart,” Olivia explained.
Claire did not remember placing any blanket in the cart before then.
She remembered admiring it.
She remembered walking away because Evan complained about the price.
Several minutes later, a blond woman appeared and said, “You forgot this.”
Claire assumed she had changed her mind without realizing it.
The infant-aisle camera showed the woman clearly.
Melanie Price.
She removed the blanket from the shelf, carried it through a camera blind spot, then returned and placed it in Claire’s cart.
Forensic technicians opened the stitched edge.
Inside was a GPS tracker.
It activated the moment the blanket passed the scanner.
The device transmitted to the same prepaid phone Melanie bought using Sylvia’s card.
“They planned to follow me after we left,” Claire said.
Detective Lena nodded.
“Or follow anyone carrying the blanket.”
Evan expected the confrontation to remain beneath the failed camera. If Claire survived and fled, Melanie could track her. If paramedics took the blanket with Claire, it could lead them to the hospital.
But the blanket stayed beside the scanner.
Marcus had unknowingly interrupted the tracking plan when he ordered employees not to touch the scene.
The tracker showed one incoming activation request after the ambulance departed.
Someone tried to make it emit an audible tone—likely to locate it inside the hospital.
The request came from a vehicle parked two blocks away.
Traffic footage showed Sylvia’s car.
She had reached the supermarket before traveling to the hospital.
She never entered.
She watched the ambulance leave, realized the blanket remained behind, and went directly to Victor.
Claire’s entire body tightened with anger.
“She knew what Evan had done before he called her.”
Lena agreed.
The officer who monitored Evan’s call heard him mention only the trust.
He never explained the assault.
Sylvia already knew.
Caleb’s video contained another detail.
Seconds before Evan shoved Claire, he glanced toward the store entrance.
A woman stood outside behind the automatic doors.
Only part of her face appeared.
Melanie.
She watched Evan grip Claire’s arm.
She did not intervene.
She raised the prepaid phone instead.
Evan may have believed someone was documenting the scene for his protection.
Caleb’s independent recording captured what Melanie’s selected angle was designed to hide.
Detective Lena issued a statewide alert for her.
Victor described Melanie as a frightened employee who had probably been coerced by Sylvia.
Sylvia described her as Victor’s loyal operative.
Evan refused to discuss her.
Rachel recognized the name.
Melanie had been a paralegal at Victor’s firm during Rachel’s property transfer five years earlier.
