Chapter 1 - THE DOOR AT 2:13 A.M.

Nathan heard Lily struggling to breathe before he reached pediatric room 1204.

The door stood slightly open beneath the cold fluorescent lights of Boston Mercy Medical Center. Inside, the heart monitor beeped unevenly while shadows moved across the children’s drawings taped to the wall.

Nathan pushed the door wider.

His briefcase slipped from his hand.

Victoria stood barefoot on Lily’s hospital bed, her silk gown brushing the tangled blanket. One hand swung the IV bag above the child. The other twisted the tubing where it entered Lily’s bruised arm.

Lily cowered against the raised headboard, clutching her stuffed rabbit with her free hand.

“The sicker you are,” Victoria whispered, “the more valuable you are to me.”

Nathan charged into the room.

He tore the IV bag from Victoria’s grip and shoved her away from the bed.

“Stay away from my daughter, you evil woman!”

Victoria stumbled into the sofa.

Nathan reached toward Lily.

The eight-year-old recoiled so violently that her monitor alarm accelerated. She covered her face and pressed herself into the corner of the mattress.

“She’s terrifyingly angry,” Lily gasped.

Victoria’s entire expression transformed.

She sank into the sofa and began sobbing just as hurried footsteps approached the room.

Dr. Marcus Hale entered first. Carmen Vega, the hospital’s pediatric protection nurse, followed with two security guards.

Victoria pointed frantically at Nathan.

“Nathan attacked me—I was just fixing her IV drip!”

Nathan held up the twisted tubing.

“She was forcing something through it.”

One guard moved toward him.

Carmen stepped around the bed and pulled back Lily’s blanket.

Her face changed.

Fresh restraint marks circled the child’s ankles. Small punctures covered the skin near the official IV site. Beneath the mattress, secured with medical tape, was a syringe filled with cloudy liquid.

Beside it lay a drawing.

Lily had drawn herself in the hospital bed while a tall woman stood above her holding a needle. The woman’s face had been covered in violent black strokes.

Carmen struck the emergency alarm.

“No one is to touch this bed. Call the police now!”

Dr. Hale sealed the syringe inside an evidence container. The guards blocked Victoria when she lunged toward the mattress.

Nathan stared at the hidden syringe.

“How long has that been there?”

Lily lowered her hands from her face.

Her lips trembled.

“She changes it whenever the nurses leave.”

Victoria screamed that the child was confused.

Carmen noticed a folded confidentiality agreement beneath Lily’s pillow. It bore Nathan’s forged signature and instructed hospital staff to discuss Lily’s treatment only with Victoria.

At the bottom of the document was a handwritten room number:

Beside it appeared a schedule of night-shift gaps.

Someone had recorded exactly when Lily would be alone.

👉 Victoria had been caught beside the hidden syringe, but the schedule proved she knew the hospital’s security weaknesses before Lily was admitted.
