Chapter 7 - THE TRUST EMILY CREATED
Nathan finally received the complete terms of Lily’s inheritance.
Emily Carter had created the trust after her cancer diagnosis, two years before her fatal accident. She worried that Nathan’s work travel might leave Lily dependent on others if anything happened to both parents.
The trust appointed Nathan as primary guardian.
If Nathan became unable or unfit, a court could appoint another adult.
That guardian would control medical and educational distributions.
If Lily were declared permanently disabled, annual distributions could exceed $600,000.
Victoria learned about the clause while helping Nathan organize estate papers before their engagement.
She began encouraging him to travel more.
She offered to manage Lily’s appointments.
She persuaded him to add her as an emergency medical contact.
Each choice appeared reasonable.
Together, they created access.
Nathan sat beside Lily’s bed while she slept.
He did not touch her.
Carmen had explained that Lily’s fear response might not distinguish between him and Victoria yet. Reaching without permission could make the child feel trapped.
So he waited.
When Lily opened her eyes, he signed the simple question Carmen taught him:
Can I sit closer?
Lily nodded.
He moved the chair beside the bed.
“Did I leave you too much?” he asked softly.
Lily looked at the rabbit.
“You always came back.”
“That isn’t the same as being there.”
“No.”
Her honesty hurt.
Nathan promised he would not travel again until she felt safe.
Lily shook her head.
“You say promises when you’re sad.”
He nearly broke.
“What should I say?”
“Say what happens tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow, Carmen will be here. Detective Rachel will talk to you only if you want. I will sleep in the chair. Victoria cannot enter.”
Lily considered each detail.
Then she reached for his hand.
Nathan did not squeeze.
He let her decide the pressure.
Grace Holloway, the attorney managing Emily’s trust, arrived with troubling news.
Victoria had filed three reimbursement requests claiming she personally provided full-time specialized care.
Nathan’s electronic approval appeared on each.
He never approved them.
The signatures came from a tablet Victoria gave him for his birthday.
The device contained hidden software that copied his handwriting.
Victoria had also prepared an amendment naming herself successor guardian if Nathan became medically or psychologically incapable.
The amendment was incomplete because it required an independent witness.
Dr. Blake had agreed to sign after the staged gala crisis.
Nathan’s supposed instability would be established through an assault accusation.
That explained Victoria’s instant transformation in room 1204.
She expected security to see Nathan standing over her.
If Carmen had not discovered the restraints and syringe, the initial report might have described Nathan as the aggressor.
The plan required Lily to be severely injured.
Victoria would become the grieving caregiver.
Nathan would become the violent father.
The trust would become hers.
Grace froze every account.
Victoria could no longer pay Frank, Blake’s legal fees, or her private attorney from Lily’s money.
Minutes after the freeze, someone attempted to withdraw $900,000 through an emergency medical transfer.
The request used Carmen’s hospital credentials.
Carmen had never accessed the trust.
Her identity had been copied.
The destination account belonged to a company called BrightPath Pediatric Care.
