Chapter 10 - EMILY’S BOX
Nathan and Grace opened the safe-deposit box under court supervision.
Inside were Emily’s necklace, wedding ring, handwritten letters, and an old phone recovered after the car accident.
Nathan had been told the phone was destroyed.
Victoria purchased the contents of Emily’s storage locker at an unpaid-property auction two years earlier.
That was before she claimed to have met Nathan by chance at a charity dinner.
She had researched him.
The phone contained family photographs, trust correspondence, and private messages describing Nathan’s travel schedule.
Victoria used Emily’s life to build the perfect approach.
She knew what Lily loved.
She knew what Nathan feared.
She knew the trust existed.
Their relationship had never begun accidentally.
A folder inside the box held background reports on Nathan’s company, Lily’s school, and Emily’s relatives.
Victoria selected the children’s charity gala because Nathan attended every year in Emily’s memory.
She introduced herself beside Emily’s memorial photograph.
Nathan remembered believing that coincidence carried meaning.
Now it felt like another theft.
Grace found a copied letter from Emily to Nathan.
If anything happens to me, please do not let Lily become a project for people who love being needed more than they love her.
Nathan sat down.
Emily had written the warning during cancer treatment, before recovering and later dying in the unrelated crash.
Victoria must have read it.
Instead of being deterred, she built the plan around it.
The box contained another document: a draft change to Lily’s trust.
Emily had considered appointing Carmen as an independent medical advocate because Carmen cared for her during cancer treatment.
The amendment was never finalized.
Victoria found the draft and understood Carmen could become dangerous if she ever reviewed Lily’s care.
That explained the stolen jacket and planned frame.
Carmen had not been randomly assigned to room 1204.
A nurse who knew Emily requested her after recognizing Lily’s surname.
Victoria tried to have the assignment changed.
The request failed.
Carmen examined Lily, noticed the bruises, and called Nathan.
The past Victoria stole had created the person who exposed her.
Detective Rachel confronted Victoria with the safe-deposit records.
Victoria stopped pretending the relationship was accidental.
“I studied them because I admired Emily.”
“You purchased her private belongings.”
“I preserved them.”
“You used them to approach her widower.”
“Nathan needed someone.”
“You decided that someone would be you.”
Victoria’s voice rose.
“I gave that family structure.”
“You gave Lily insulin.”
Victoria struck the interview-room wall.
“She would have grown up and forgotten me!”
The motive beneath the money finally surfaced.
Victoria did not only want the trust.
She wanted permanent dependence.
A healthy Lily could eventually reject her.
A disabled Lily would require lifelong care.
A frightened Lily could be isolated.
A discredited Nathan could be removed.
Victoria had built a future in which no one could leave her.
Grace found a second key in Emily’s box.
It opened a small locker at South Station.
Police entered expecting documents.
They found a child’s suitcase, winter clothes, forged passports, and airline tickets for Victoria and Lily.
Departure was scheduled for two days after the planned gala crisis.
