Chapter 15 - THE SECOND SYRINGE

Police placed Dr. Hale under temporary supervision while verifying his movements.

He had remained in the administrative conference room when the maintenance figure entered the hallway.

The new agreement was another fabrication.

Its purpose was not to transfer Lily to Hale.

It was to make investigators distrust everyone still close to the child.

Nathan.

Carmen.

Hale.

The BrightPath system survived by turning protectors against one another.

Lily was scheduled for discharge the following morning under independent security.

She asked to leave Boston Mercy.

“I don’t like the night here,” she said.

Nathan understood.

The hospital had saved her life, but room 1204 would always hold the memory of Victoria standing above the bed.

Grace arranged a protected rehabilitation apartment where Lily could recover with Nathan, Carmen’s visiting support, and court-supervised medical care.

Every medication would come from an independent pharmacy.

Every visitor would be approved.

No internet-connected medical device would remain active.

At midnight, Lily slept beside the stuffed rabbit while Nathan sat in the chair.

Her bruised arm rested above the blanket.

For the first time, her breathing remained steady without alarms.

Carmen entered quietly carrying the discharge papers.

“All verified,” she said. “No copied signatures. No automated orders.”

Nathan examined every page himself.

Dr. Hale waited in the hallway rather than entering.

Lily had not asked to see him.

Detective Rachel confirmed that Evan Ross had been arrested at the airport after attempting to board a flight under a false name.

His laptop contained no additional scheduled transfers.

Frank, Blake, Allison, Melanie, and Victoria remained in custody or under supervision.

The network appeared finished.

At 2:12 a.m., the power flickered.

Backup lighting came on immediately.

Nathan stood.

Carmen reached for the emergency alarm.

At 2:13, Lily’s IV monitor activated even though the IV had been removed hours earlier.

The screen displayed a pulse.

Slow.

Regular.

Not Lily’s.

A second patient profile opened under her name.

The birth date matched.

The photograph did not.

It showed another little girl in a hospital bed holding an identical stuffed rabbit.

Beneath the image was a BrightPath file number created six months earlier.

Nathan stared at the screen.

“Who is that?”

Carmen searched the disconnected terminal.

“There shouldn’t be another Carter profile.”

Lily woke and saw the photograph.

Her face drained of color.

“I know her.”

Nathan knelt beside the bed.

“From where?”

“Victoria showed me videos.”

“What did she say?”

Lily gripped the rabbit.

“She said that girl was the first Lily.”

The monitor changed to a live feed.

The unknown child lay inside a dark room with restraints attached to the bed. A hidden syringe rested beneath the mattress.

Someone in a silk gown entered the edge of the frame.

Victoria remained in custody across the city.

The figure turned slightly.

It was not Victoria.

But she wore Emily’s necklace.

Then the child in the feed opened her eyes and whispered:

“Nathan?”

Carmen pressed the alarm.

The live image shook as someone reached for the camera.

Before the feed vanished, a man’s voice said:

“Room 1204 was never the beginning.”
