PART 1

“He married her the day before… and the very next morning, she threw him out of the apartment he secretly owned.”

Carl Morrison was still wearing the shirt from his wedding breakfast when his new wife dragged his suitcase into the hallway.

The sound of the wheels on the wooden floor was louder than it should have been.

A hard little rattle.

Then a thud.

Mallerie stood in the narrow hallway of Morrison Garden Apartments with her arms crossed, blonde hair perfectly brushed, cream blouse spotless, beige trousers pressed like she had prepared for a business meeting instead of betrayal.

Her two adult sons stood behind her.

Jake avoided Carl’s eyes.

Derek looked like he had not slept.

The apartment door behind them was open.

Inside was the small home Carl had lived in for eleven years.

The home he had repaired with his own hands.

The home where his late wife’s favorite blue mug still sat in the kitchen cabinet.

The home Mallerie had slept in for one night after marrying him at City Hall.

Now she pointed toward the suitcase.

“You’re leaving, Carl.”

Carl stared at her.

At first, he thought she was joking.

Then he saw Jake’s hand on the suitcase handle.

He saw Derek’s shame.

He saw the new lockbox on the apartment door.

His heart went quiet.

“Leaving?”

He looked past her into his own apartment.

“This is my home.”

Mallerie’s mouth curved.

Not quite a smile.

More like satisfaction finally allowed to show.

“Not anymore.”

She lifted her chin.

“You’re just the building manager.”

Carl blinked once.

Only once.

Jake muttered, “Mom said the management company approved it.”

Derek turned sharply toward him.

“Don’t.”

Mallerie glared at Derek.

But the younger man had already cracked.

His voice came low and urgent.

“Mom… you planned this before the wedding.”

The hallway went still.

Somewhere downstairs, a tenant’s dog barked.

A door opened a few inches.

Then another.

Carl looked at Mallerie.

Yesterday, she had held his hands and promised loyalty.

This morning, she had packed his life into a suitcase and demoted him in his own hallway.

For a moment, the hurt was so deep that he almost laughed.

Then he reached into the inside pocket of his dark blue henley and pulled out a thick legal folder.

Mallerie’s smile faded.

Jake’s face tightened.

Derek lowered his eyes.

Carl’s voice changed.

It became calm.

Too calm.

“Then you’re all going to want to sit down for what comes next.”

Mallerie glanced at the folder.

For the first time since he met her, she looked unsure.

Carl opened it slowly.

The first page showed the name she had never bothered to investigate properly.

Morrison Garden Apartments.

Owner of record.

Carl Daniel Morrison.
