PART 9
Mallerie used the word abuse ten minutes later.
That was when Carl stopped feeling sorry for her completely.
The police had arrived because Nora requested a report.
Mallerie stood near the stairwell, one hand on her chest, voice trembling for effect.
“He is throwing out his wife the morning after our wedding.”
Officer Ramirez listened without expression.
Mallerie pointed toward Carl.
“He deceived me.”
“He hid assets.”
“He made me vulnerable.”
Carl said nothing.
Nora answered.
“Mrs. Morrison was not asked to move out of her own residence.”
“She unlawfully changed the lock on Mr. Morrison’s residence.”
“She and her son attempted to remove him using forged management documents.”
Officer Ramirez looked at the fake notice.
Then at Jake.
Jake suddenly discovered great interest in the floor.
Mallerie tried again.
“He tricked me into marriage.”
Carl finally spoke.
“No.”
“I allowed you to marry the man you thought I was.”
She stared at him.
“You lied.”
“I lived.”
“There is a difference.”
The officer asked Mallerie if she had known Carl as the building manager before the wedding.
She said yes.
He asked if Carl had ever told her she owned or would own Apartment 3B.
She said no.
He asked if she changed the lock without written authorization.
She said nothing.
That silence was the first honest answer she had given all morning.
Derek gave his statement in the stairwell.
His voice shook.
But he told the truth.
The late-night planning.
The fake notice.
Jake stealing letterhead.
Mallerie saying Carl would not fight after the wedding.
Mallerie saying he loved being needed.
Jake cursed at him twice.
Officer Ramirez warned him once.
That was enough.
When it was over, Mallerie looked smaller.
Not harmless.
Just reduced.
Carl stood beside his restored door with Ellen’s scarf folded carefully over one arm.
Nora lowered her voice.
“We can file for annulment based on fraud.”
Carl nodded.
Mallerie heard.
Her face changed.
“Annulment?”
Carl looked at her.
“You wanted the marriage to last long enough to take my home.”
“It lasted long enough to reveal yours.”
Her eyes filled.
This time, the tears might have been real.
It did not matter.
Real tears do not erase deliberate harm.
The security chief handed Jake his coat.
“Time to go.”
Jake resisted until the officer looked at him.
Then he moved.
Mallerie waited for Carl to soften.
He did not.
That was the end.
Not when the papers were filed.
Not when the police took statements.
