PART 6

The security chief was named Harold Banks.

He had worked weekend coverage for Morrison Garden since Ellen was alive.

He did not wear a dramatic uniform.

Just a black jacket, radio, and the tired patience of a man who had removed drunk guests, angry exes, and one raccoon from the laundry room.

He stopped beside Carl.

“Mr. Morrison.”

Mallerie’s head snapped toward him.

“Mr. Morrison?”

Harold looked at her.

“Yes, ma’am.”

“The owner.”

The word owner traveled through the hallway like electricity.

Mallerie’s mouth opened.

Jake looked at the floor.

Derek looked relieved and ashamed at the same time.

Carl handed Harold a copy of the unauthorized lock invoice.

“Please call the locksmith back.”

“Remove that lockbox.”

“Restore my access.”

Harold nodded.

“Already on it.”

Mallerie stepped forward.

“You can’t just erase me.”

Carl looked at her.

“You erased yourself.”

“I am your wife.”

“You became my wife yesterday.”

“And tried to make me homeless today.”

“That will matter.”

She drew herself up.

“I have marital rights.”

Nora Feld’s voice came from the stairwell.

“Not the ones you think.”

The attorney stepped onto the landing in a dark suit, silver briefcase in hand, looking deeply unimpressed by everyone except Carl.

Mallerie stared at her.

“Who are you?”

“Nora Feld.”

“Counsel for Mr. Morrison and Morrison Family Trust.”

Jake whispered something under his breath.

Nora looked at him.

“I hope that was not legal advice.”

He shut up.

Nora turned to Mallerie.

“The building was acquired before the marriage.”

“The apartment is designated to Mr. Morrison personally under trust occupancy.”

“You signed a marriage disclosure yesterday acknowledging separate premarital property.”

Mallerie blinked.

“I signed wedding paperwork.”

Nora opened her briefcase.

“You signed what was placed in front of you without reading.”

Carl looked at her.

A strange sadness moved through him.

Because that had been Mallerie’s own weapon turned back on her.

She had assumed he would not read.

Instead, she had not.

Nora continued.

“Additionally, we have evidence of attempted unlawful exclusion from residence, use of obsolete company letterhead, unauthorized lock change, and possible conspiracy to defraud.”

Mallerie’s voice shook.

“This is ridiculous.”

Mrs. Alvarez from 2A spoke from her doorway.

“No, honey.”

“It’s embarrassing.”

A ripple moved through the tenants.

Not laughter exactly.

Worse.

Judgment.

Mallerie had wanted Carl humiliated in the hallway.
