Chapter 11 - BENEATH THE LOOSE TILE

Investigators returned to the house.
The loose tile lifted easily.
Beneath it was a narrow cavity around an old heating pipe. Water from the dining-room spill had collected inside.
The liquid contained the same sedative found in Sophie and Michael.
It also contained a second compound.
A muscle relaxant used during certain medical procedures.
Michael’s hospital records showed traces of that compound after the warehouse accident, even before doctors administered surgery medication.
At the time, the result was dismissed as contamination.
The dining-room mixture suggested otherwise.
Sophie remembered Margaret preparing a glass for Michael before he left for work on the morning of the accident.
“He said it tasted strange.”
“What did Margaret say?” Laura asked.
“She said the vitamins sank to the bottom.”
Michael recalled feeling dizzy while driving to the warehouse. He nearly called in sick but continued because an audit meeting with Peter was scheduled that afternoon.
The muscle relaxant could have slowed his reaction when the platform shifted.
The loosened bolt caused the fall.
The drug made escape less likely.
The plan was more deliberate than Curtis claimed.
Margaret denied adding the second substance.
“I only used the sedative Peter gave me.”
“Who prepared the mixture?” Laura asked.
“Peter brought sealed bottles.”
“Did you pour one into Michael’s drink?”
“Yes.”
“You knew it was meant to weaken him.”
“I thought it would make him tired.”
“You still served it.”
Margaret lowered her head.
Peter had preserved small bottles in the dining-room cavity in case he ever needed leverage against her. The recent spill washed residue from one broken vial into the puddle.
Sophie slipped in evidence Peter had hidden months earlier.
The loose tile also concealed a USB drive wrapped in plastic.
It contained Peter’s private records.
Payments to Curtis.
Forged medical declarations.
Trust invoices.
Audio files of Margaret.
And a video recorded inside Peter’s car after the accident.
Margaret sat in the passenger seat crying.
“He almost died.”
Peter answered:
“He didn’t. Now stop panicking and follow the guardianship plan.”
“You said a broken leg.”
“The outcome is still useful.”
“What if Michael remembers the drink?”
“He will be medicated for weeks.”
“What about Sophie?”
“She believes adults who speak calmly.”
The video ended with Margaret wiping her face.
Then she asked:
“When do I get the first trust payment?”
Her fear had lasted less than four minutes.
The drive provided the strongest evidence yet that Peter directed the financial and legal conspiracy.
Police issued a federal warrant and released his photograph publicly.
His former clients began contacting investigators.
Several described aggressive guardianship strategies and unexplained medical claims.
Laura kept the Grant case separate from those reports.
Sophie did not need her story buried beneath a larger scandal.
The central facts were enough.
Peter targeted Michael after the audit request.
Curtis weakened the platform.
Margaret drugged Michael and supplied his schedule.
After the fall, Margaret and Peter used Sophie’s trust, controlled communication, and fabricated behavioral evidence.
When Sophie resisted, Margaret abused her.
The story was no longer confusing.
It was devastatingly direct.
Michael and Sophie returned to the apartment after the house search ended.
Sophie asked whether the dining room would remain part of their life.
Michael looked at the photograph of the tiled floor.
“No.”
He planned to sell the property after the trial.
Sophie considered that.
“Can we take the crayons?”
“Every one.”
That night, she drew a new dining room.
The floor remained green.
But the door was open, and no one stood between her and the sunlight.
Then Detective Laura called.
Peter’s vehicle had been found near the airport.
His passport remained inside the cabin.
He had not boarded a flight.
A security image showed him entering a hospital service entrance wearing medical scrubs.
Boston? No—the story is outside Columbus. He entered Michael’s rehabilitation center in Columbus.

The timestamp was from that morning.
👉 Peter had returned to the medical facility where Michael recovered, and no one knew what evidence—or person—he intended to reach.
