Chapter 5 - THE CHILD WHO WAS ALWAYS CLEANING
Sophie had been cleaning because Margaret needed the house to tell a particular story.
Every room had been photographed.
A spotless bedroom for Margaret.
A damaged playroom blamed on Sophie.
Broken dishes placed beside the child’s chair.
Crayon marks added to the dining-room wall after Sophie went to sleep.
Margaret submitted the images to Peter, who included them in court reports describing an increasingly destructive child.
The pantry camera was only one of four recording devices.
Police found another inside a smoke detector, one above the staircase, and one facing Sophie’s bedroom door.
None recorded continuously.
Margaret activated them only after provoking an incident.
In one recovered clip, she swept crayons onto the floor and ordered Sophie to pick them up before counting to ten.
When the child failed because one hand was carrying a laundry basket, Margaret kicked the crayons under the table and began filming.
Another clip showed Margaret waking Sophie after midnight and demanding that she mop the kitchen.
Sophie cried from exhaustion.
Margaret told the camera:
“This is what I face every night.”
The footage began after the awakening.
It did not show Margaret pouring water across the floor.
One camera still contained its memory card.
Margaret had missed it because Sophie covered the indicator light with green paint.
The child explained that the blinking red light frightened her.
By hiding it, she unknowingly prevented Margaret from realizing the camera remained active.
The card preserved nearly three weeks of unedited footage.
Michael watched only portions.
Sophie carrying buckets heavier than she could manage.
Sophie eating alone after Margaret removed her dinner.
Sophie standing at the front door asking to call her father.
Margaret answering:
“He doesn’t want to hear you complain.”
In another recording, Peter sat at the dining table while Margaret wore the crimson gown.
“The audit begins on her birthday,” he said.
“Then Rosewood takes her before that.”
“What if Michael returns?”
“The rehabilitation report will say he cannot provide care.”
“What if the report changes?”
Margaret poured wine.
“Then the supplements continue.”
Peter did not object.
He asked only:
“How much remains in the trust?”
The video established that he knew about the medication scheme.
It also revealed why Margaret wore the red gown during their meetings. Peter had purchased it for her with trust money, listing it as therapeutic clothing for Sophie.
Their relationship was not merely professional.
Messages recovered from Peter’s cloud account confirmed an affair lasting more than a year.
Margaret planned to move into Peter’s lake house after Sophie entered Rosewood.
Michael’s home would be refinanced under the guardianship to pay supposed treatment costs.
The trust would fund their life.
Sophie would remain in an institution where every complaint could be labeled another behavioral episode.
Michael turned away from the screen.
“She wanted my daughter gone.”
Laura corrected him gently.
“She wanted Sophie inaccessible. There is a difference.”
Margaret needed the child alive because the trust existed for her benefit.
But she needed Sophie unable to challenge the expenses.
The recovered recording also captured a conversation about the warehouse accident.
Peter asked:
“Are you certain Michael never saw the amended maintenance report?”
Margaret answered:
“He was unconscious before it was filed.”
The accident had occurred when a storage platform collapsed beneath Michael at work. Investigators blamed an overlooked structural defect.
Peter’s firm represented the warehouse owner.
Michael had never known that.
Laura replayed the sentence.
“What amended report?”
Michael’s face tightened.
“I don’t know.”
Sophie looked down at her crayons.
“The green paper?”
She said Margaret kept a green report inside the red folder until Peter took it away.
On its first page was a photograph of the warehouse platform.
