Chapter 7 - THE CAMERA MARGARET COULD NOT CONTROL
Margaret’s detention interview continued for four hours.
She admitted Peter wanted Michael temporarily incapacitated.
An extended recovery would delay the trust audit and allow Peter to move money through false legal expenses.
Margaret agreed to become temporary guardian.
“What did you believe Curtis would do?” Laura asked.
“Create a minor workplace accident.”
“What kind?”
“A fall from the lower platform.”
“Michael suffered spinal injuries and nearly died.”
“Peter said Curtis made a mistake.”
“Why did you still work with them afterward?”
Margaret’s eyes hardened.
“Because everything had already happened.”
That was how she described choices made over six months.
As though the accident forced her to drug Michael, abuse Sophie, steal money, and prepare institutional placement.
Laura asked why she hit Sophie.
“She challenged every instruction.”
“She was seven.”
“She knew how to make me look cruel.”
“The unedited footage did not make you anything. It showed what you did.”
Margaret had no answer.
The camera she could not control ended every argument.
The court released selected evidence to prosecutors, while the full recordings remained sealed to protect Sophie.
Peter attempted to contact Margaret through an encrypted messaging application.
Police monitored the account.
His message read:
Do not mention the maintenance report. The child never saw enough to understand it.
Margaret answered under supervision:
You said Michael would be gone six weeks.
Peter replied:
And you said you could manage one little girl.
The exchange placed him inside both parts of the plan.
Laura traced the connection to a motel near the Indiana border.
Police arrived after Peter left.
Inside the room were shredded legal papers, an empty laptop case, and a copy of Sophie’s Rosewood admission order.
A handwritten note listed three options:
Discredit the child.
Transfer the child.
Disqualify the father.
Peter had prepared a legal response for each threat.
Yet another page contained an option no one had seen:
Activate Anna’s alternate trustee.
Michael did not know Anna had named one.
Grace reviewed the original trust archive.
Anna’s signed documents listed Peter’s firm as temporary legal administrator, never as trustee. The alternate trustee name had been removed from the copy Peter kept.
The bank’s sealed original identified the person:
Eleanor Brooks, Anna’s older sister.
Eleanor had cut contact with the family after Anna’s funeral. Margaret claimed she moved overseas and wanted nothing to do with Sophie.
That was another lie.
Eleanor had sent birthday cards, letters, and requests to visit.
Peter routed them through his office.
None reached Michael or Sophie.
When police contacted her in Seattle, she answered immediately.
“I have been trying to see my niece for four years.”
Eleanor flew to Ohio under court supervision.
Sophie did not remember her, so Eleanor did not demand affection.
She showed the child photographs of Anna, told simple stories, and asked permission before sitting beside her.
Peter had isolated Sophie not only from her father.
He had removed every alternate adult capable of questioning the trust.
Eleanor remembered a conversation with Anna before her death.
“Anna did not trust Peter,” she said. “She kept him because Michael believed he was loyal to the family.”
“Why name you alternate trustee?”
“She said if anyone tried to use Sophie’s care as a reason to control the money, I should intervene.”
Anna had anticipated financial exploitation.
She had not anticipated Margaret.
Eleanor brought one original letter Peter never received.
Anna wrote:
If Michael is ever hurt and Margaret takes charge, inspect every document twice. She resents Sophie for inheriting what she believes our family owed her.
Margaret had known about the trust long before Michael’s accident.
The money was not a sudden temptation.
