Chapter 10 - The Ring From the First NightOlivia removed the ring and placed it on the counter.

“All neonatal nurses in the Northstar program received one.”
“You kept it for ten years?” Claire asked.
“I kept it as evidence.”
“Evidence you never gave anyone.”
Olivia lowered her eyes.
“Yes.”
The ring carried a near-field access chip used to open Northstar medication cabinets, infant rooms, and laboratory archives.
Olivia claimed hers had been inactive since Harbor closed.
A scan showed it had opened a secure door three days earlier.
“I was not there.”
“Who had the ring?” Sarah asked.
Olivia looked toward Michael.
“He borrowed it.”
Michael stared at her.
“I have never seen that ring.”
Olivia admitted meeting him privately two months earlier. He asked whether any old Harbor credentials remained active because the unknown messages had begun.
She gave him the ring for one night.
“He returned it the next morning.”
Michael shook his head.
“That was not me.”
The duplicate.
Daniel Bennett had approached Olivia wearing Michael’s face.
He learned the ring still worked and copied its chip before returning it.
Olivia believed she was helping Emma’s father investigate the threat.
Instead, she reopened Harbor’s doors.
Claire did not excuse her.
Olivia did not ask her to.
The tunnel beneath Harborview led toward a former marine-medical research center built beneath Pier 47. Tactical officers found the entrance unlocked by Olivia’s copied credential.
Sarah remained at Emma’s bedside while watching body-camera footage.
The clinic was larger than anyone expected.
Two pediatric bedrooms.
A classroom.
A cafeteria replica modeled after Cedar Grove.
A recording room containing thousands of videos.
The hidden girl’s empty IV bag lay in the corridor.
No Bennett.
No Megan.
No Daniel.
A message had been written on the observation glass:
THE FATHER TAKES THE DAUGHTER HE CHOSE.
Sarah turned toward Michael.
He remained beside the bed under police supervision.
“Then it doesn’t mean you.”
“Unless they expect you to doubt that.”
Emma opened her eyes.
“Dad knows the tunnel.”
Michael looked at her.
“How?”
“You brought me there.”
Sarah felt the familiar betrayal rise again.
“When?”
Emma described waking in a white room six weeks earlier. Michael sat beside her while Dr. Bennett drew blood.
Michael insisted it was Daniel wearing his face.
Emma shook her head.
“You had our family bracelet.”
Michael wore a woven bracelet Emma made him at summer camp. The duplicate had copied his face and clothes, but not every private object.
Michael looked at his wrist.
The bracelet was gone.
“I lost it last month.”
“Where?” Claire asked.
He remembered waking inside his parked car after meeting Daniel in the garage. He had blamed exhaustion for the missing hour.
Daniel may have sedated him, stolen the bracelet, and used it during Emma’s appointment.
But the timing created another possibility.
Michael himself might have attended and lost the memory.
Claire ordered a toxicology test.
Traces of the same sedative found in Emma’s hair appeared in Michael’s.
Harbor had been dosing him too.
The unknown contact was not merely threatening Michael.
They had been altering his memory while using his identity.
Police searched the clinic archive.
A file labeled PARENTAL SUBSTITUTE contained recordings of both Michaels taking turns speaking with Emma and Lily.
Sometimes the real Michael knew.
Sometimes he appeared confused.
In one recording, Michael sat beside the hidden girl.
She asked:
“Will you tell Sarah about me?”
He answered:
“Not until I know which daughter she will choose.”
The bracelet was visible on his wrist.
The date came from six months earlier—before Michael claimed he knew Lily was alive.
Sarah turned toward him.
He did not deny the voice.
“I don’t remember saying that.”
“But you said it.”
“Yes.”
Memory loss did not erase action.
The clinic’s final file opened automatically.
Michael appeared in a hospital room signing a consent form.
The title read:
TRANSFER OF PRIMARY DAUGHTER STATUS.
The receiving guardian was Daniel Bennett.
The child’s listed name was Emma Carter.
The signature was Michael’s.
The biometric confirmation was current.
Michael whispered:
May you like
“I signed away one of them.”
👉 Harbor had forced or manipulated Michael into legally choosing which twin remained his daughter—and the selected identity might not belong to the child Sarah raised.
