Megan stood behind her while she copied Sarah’s expressions. Daniel entered wearing Michael’s face. They asked Cara to identify which parents looked more convincing.
Wrong answers meant darkness.

Cara learned Emma’s birthdays before she knew her own.
She watched Michael teach Emma to ride a bicycle.

“Did you believe them?”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“Until Cara was four.”
“And after?”
Megan’s silence mattered.
After Cara turned four, Megan had access to money, transport credentials, and outside communication. She continued because Helena convinced her that Sarah and Michael would take Cara while abandoning Lily.
Megan wanted all three children exposed eventually.
She also wanted Cara to remain hers.

Sarah accepted the correction.
“No. I cannot honestly remember wanting a child whose face I had never seen. I can tell you that learning you exist matters to me, and I will not force you to make that mean more than it does today.”
Cara looked surprised.
Megan had always supplied the answer she expected Cara to give.
Sarah allowed uncertainty to remain.
“Do you want me to call you Mom?” Cara asked.
“Only when the word belongs to you.”
“Will Emma and Lily hate me?”
“They are frightened and curious.”
“Did Emma take my room?”
“There was no room waiting for one specific child. Harbor created that story so you would blame her instead of the adults.”
Cara looked down at her hands.
“I wanted her to collapse.”
Sarah’s chest tightened.
“Did you put the drug in her lunch?”
“No. Bennett did. But I knew a message was coming.”
“Did you warn anyone?”
“I thought if Emma became sick, you would finally see me.”
The confession did not make Cara a criminal mastermind.
She was thirteen, conditioned from birth, and told another child’s medical crisis was the only route to her mother.
It still required care and accountability.
Emma chose to send one message.
I’m angry you knew. I also know adults made you think sickness was the door. I don’t want to meet yet.
Cara read it three times.
