Its barcode belonged to Emma’s original newborn chart.
The bracelet Sarah had saved in a memory box at home was a replacement issued three days after birth.
Dr. Bennett’s earlier report listed Emma as Baby A.
The original barcode identified Baby B.
Michael stared at the records.
“Which child did we take home?”
Sarah turned toward him.
“You tell me.”
“I don’t know.”
The twins were genetically identical, and the marrow transfer further blurred blood-based distinctions. Infant photographs could not reliably separate them.
Northstar had intentionally changed the names across charts, bracelets, and laboratory samples.
The girl raised as Emma might have been Lily.
The child at Pier 47 might have been Emma.
“That changes nothing about who our daughter is,” Sarah said.
Michael nodded.
“But it changes what Harbor was testing.”
Nurse Olivia remembered the labels being replaced after the stem-cell procedure. A Northstar administrator told staff the change corrected a clerical mistake.
Olivia had seen one infant moved to the research wing.
She could not swear which one.
Emma listened from the bed.
“Is Emma my name?”
“It is your name because it is the name you have lived with,” Sarah said.
“What if it belonged to her first?”
“Names are not chairs. You did not steal it by being given it.”
Michael looked toward the floor.
The second vial from the pier was tested.
It contained the correct stabilizing compound with none of the metabolic inhibitor that caused the collapse.
Someone had deliberately mixed the harmful substance into Emma’s school dose.
The dosing system was not merely maintaining her condition.
Someone inside Harbor was trying to destabilize one twin and blame another faction.
Claire returned with an update.
Dr. Bennett’s escape route led to the hospital laboratory. He removed several blood samples and accessed a freezer registered to an inactive Northstar study.
Inside, police found preserved samples from Sarah, Michael, Emma, Lily—and Matthew.
The genetic results changed the investigation.
Matthew was not biologically related to Michael.
His copied identity was entirely constructed.
But he was related to Dr. Bennett.
Father and son.
Sarah stared at the report.
“Bennett said his son Daniel disappeared.”
Claire nodded.
“Daniel Bennett underwent facial reconstruction and assumed Michael’s identity under the name Matthew Carter.”
Dr. Bennett had lied about not knowing who the duplicate was.
He had helped create him.
Why?
A recorded message from Daniel explained part of it.
Years earlier, Daniel discovered that Northstar had kept Lily alive inside a protected research residence. He attempted to expose the program.
His father stopped him.
Bennett argued that immediate exposure would cause the sponsors to move or kill every remaining child.
Daniel agreed to infiltrate Harbor instead.
He changed his face and identity to become Lily’s legal medical guardian.
Over time, infiltration became participation.
He delivered medications.
Signed transfer forms.
Helped take Emma from school.
He told himself proximity allowed him to protect both girls.
Like Michael, he became another man who called control rescue.
“Who altered today’s dose?” Sarah asked.
Claire shook her head.
“Daniel blamed Bennett. Bennett is missing.”
Emma’s monitor sounded.
The harmful inhibitor had fallen, but her immune markers were deteriorating.
Olivia prepared the tested stabilizer.
Before administering it, she scanned Emma’s wristband.
The hospital system rejected the medication.
PATIENT GENETIC PROFILE DOES NOT MATCH EMMA CARTER.
A second file opened automatically.
LILY CARTER—CURRENT LOCATION: HARBORVIEW BED 26.
Emma looked toward Sarah.
“Am I Lily?”
Sarah took her hand.
“You are my daughter.”
The security camera above the bed rotated.
A woman’s voice came through its speaker.
“Then prove it by bringing her sister back.”
Sarah recognized the voice.
It belonged to Megan Price, the supposedly dead Northstar coordinator.
The camera feed changed to a live room.
The girl from Pier 47 sat beside Dr. Bennett.
He held an IV bag.
Megan stood behind the camera.
