Chapter 12 - The Other SarahFacial experts examined the photograph.

The second woman was not identical to Sarah.
She had undergone cosmetic reconstruction, dental work, and years of behavioral training to approximate Sarah’s appearance.
Harbor called such people family substitutes.
They were used to sign documents, attend appointments, and reinforce the official version of events.
The substitute Sarah appeared in hospital records during the two days Sarah remained unconscious after delivery.
She signed Emma’s discharge forms.
She authorized Lily’s transfer.
She met Michael in a dimly lit consultation room.
Michael remembered the meeting.
He believed the woman was Sarah.
“You spoke to her?” Sarah asked.
“She told me not to mention Lily until you recovered emotionally.”
“And you never noticed she wasn’t me?”
“You were swollen from surgery, exhausted, and barely conscious whenever I saw you.”
The excuse sounded possible.
It did not make the result less horrifying.
Harbor had created substitute versions of both parents.
Daniel became Michael.
An unknown woman became Sarah.
Together, they could maintain a legal family independent of the real one.
Claire traced Sarah’s cloned phone call toward the Bainbridge ferry terminal.
Police surrounded the terminal, but the caller moved across the network too quickly to locate.
A locker code arrived on Sarah’s phone.
Inside the terminal locker, investigators found a school lunch bag, a yellow volunteer coat, and a sealed video tablet.
Helena Voss appeared on-screen.
She was in her late sixties, silver-haired, controlled, and unmistakably related to Olivia.
“Sarah Carter, your anger assumes Harbor stole your family. That is only partly true.”
Sarah nearly shut the screen.
Claire stopped her.
Helena continued.
“Your fertility treatment failed. The embryos that became Emma and Lily were created through Northstar’s donor program.”
Michael turned toward Sarah.
They had conceived through a Seattle fertility clinic after two miscarriages. The clinic told them both children were biologically theirs.
Independent archived DNA showed Sarah was the biological mother.
Michael was not the biological father.
The paternal donor field had been replaced.
Michael stared at the report.
“Who is their father?”
Helena’s recording answered.
“Dr. Aaron Bennett.”
Sarah felt the room contract around her.
Bennett had supplied reproductive material to Northstar before the twins were conceived. Harbor selected him because his immune markers complemented Sarah’s rare genetic profile.
The twins were created as potential therapeutic subjects before implantation.
Michael’s identity as father was established through falsified clinic records.
Bennett may not have known which patients received his samples.
Or he may have known everything.
Claire issued an alert.
Bennett remained missing with the hidden twin.
Michael sat heavily.
“They are not mine.”
Sarah looked at him.
“They are your daughters because you raised one and spent ten years making choices about both.”
“I lied to them.”
“Yes.”
“I failed them.”
“Yes.”
“But biology does not erase you,” Sarah said. “It also does not excuse you.”
Emma watched her parents.
“Does Dr. Bennett know?”
A new message appeared from his stolen hospital account.
I knew there were embryos. I did not know Sarah received them. Helena chose her because of the mother’s previous Harbor history.
Sarah read the final line twice.
“What previous history?”
Her own childhood medical records contained unexplained immune treatments from ages four through seven. The clinic names matched Northstar shell companies.
She had been a Harbor subject decades before the twins.
Helena’s video ended with one last sentence:
“You did not enter this study as a mother. You returned to it.”
Sarah’s phone opened an archived childhood photograph automatically.
She stood beside another little girl wearing the same hospital bracelet.
May you like
The second child’s face had been scratched away.
👉 Sarah had been part of Harbor’s original childhood trials, and the erased girl beside her might explain why Helena selected her to carry the twins.
