Chapter 11 - The Second DaughterThe waterproof ledger named the second child Clara Vale.
She was six.
Unlike Elise, who had been raised by Isabel and Gabriel’s foundation, Clara grew up inside a Vale household in Switzerland.
Her purpose was to challenge Elise’s inheritance if Gabriel ever turned against Vale.
Two children had been created from the same stolen genetic material and placed on opposing sides.
Julian was listed as biological father for both.
Evelyn requested an outside DNA review before believing any document.
The initial result confirmed Elise was genetically connected to Evelyn and Julian.
Clara’s stored profile showed the same.
Julian learned about the second child while still in custody.
He stared at the photographs for a long time.
“I didn’t know.”
Evelyn no longer accepted ignorance as innocence.
“You supplied the samples and let Gabriel decide what happened.”
“I thought one embryo existed.”
“You agreed to one child without my consent. The number does not rescue you.”
Julian admitted Gabriel promised that a backup heir would reduce danger to Evelyn. If Vale knew the claim survived elsewhere, they would have less reason to kill her.
Instead, the children increased the value of the conflict.
Mateo described Gabriel’s likely destination.
A private airport north of the city.
He would move Clara to Europe, trade the original painting for protection, and claim he was saving her from Vale.
Ruiz issued alerts.
The airport hangar was empty when officers arrived.
Security footage showed Gabriel entering with a small girl in a gray coat.
Ten minutes later, Celeste arrived.
They did not fight.
They boarded the plane together.
Their supposed conflict aboard the yacht may have been staged.
The flight plan listed Montreal.
The aircraft turned east and disappeared from civilian tracking.
Isabel looked at Evelyn.
“Gabriel would never willingly work with Celeste.”
“You believed he would never let me burn.”
Isabel had no answer.
Miriam examined the provenance ledgers recovered from the yacht.
One entry described a hidden archive inside the original Mourning Girl’s canvas.
The painting contained microfilm documenting every child created, adopted, renamed, or transferred through Vale’s legal network.
The list in Julian’s copy held names.
The original held proof.
Gabriel and Celeste now controlled it.
Ruiz wanted to pursue internationally.
Federal authorities demanded the evidence remain sealed while diplomatic requests were prepared.
Mateo disagreed.
“By the time paperwork moves, Gabriel will change Clara’s identity.”
Ruiz looked at his father.
“You taught me law mattered.”
“I taught you law is a tool. Vale owns some of the hands using it.”
“That does not mean we become them.”
The reunion between father and son contained no easy repair.
Mateo had survived.
He had also chosen the operation over returning home.
Ruiz asked why he never sent one direct message.
Mateo admitted Gabriel repeatedly promised Daniel would be safer believing him dead.
“And you trusted him for twenty-two years?”
“I trusted the danger.”
“You trusted your own right to decide what I could survive.”
Mateo lowered his eyes.
The same failure existed across both families.
That night, Evelyn received a video from Clara.
The girl sat inside an airplane cabin. Gabriel slept behind her.
Celeste was not visible.
Clara whispered:
“Elise says you’re our mother.”
Evelyn leaned closer.
“Can you hear me?”
“Yes.”
“Are you safe?”
Clara looked toward someone outside the frame.
“I don’t know.”
“Who gave you the phone?”
“A lady who looks like you.”
Evelyn’s breath stopped.
“Celeste?”
Clara shook her head.
“She says her name is Eva.”
The original Vale child list identified Evelyn as Eva Weiss Mercer before Gabriel changed her name.
Someone using Evelyn’s first identity was aboard the plane.
Then an adult woman entered the frame.
She had Evelyn’s face.
Older by perhaps five years.
A thin scar crossed her chin.
“I’m the first Evelyn Gabriel created,” the woman said.
