Chapter 9 - Mateo’s MessageMateo left a recorded statement inside Elise House.

Ruiz played it alone first.
Then he allowed Evelyn to watch.
Mateo appeared older than the photograph in the scorched case, with gray hair and a scar across his throat.
“Daniel, I did not abandon you,” he began. “I stayed dead because Vale controlled the department, the courts, and every safe house I knew.”
Ruiz sat rigidly.
Mateo revealed that Gabriel helped him disappear after Voss’s betrayal. In return, Mateo protected the children connected to the restitution claims.
At first, Gabriel’s goal was legitimate.
Return stolen art.
Expose fraudulent insurers.
Restore family histories.
Then the operation changed.
Collectors threatened to kill heirs, so Gabriel created replacement heirs through secret adoptions and fertility clinics.
He began to believe bloodlines were evidence assets.
Children became legal keys.
“He loved Evelyn,” Mateo said. “But he loved the case more whenever he had to choose.”
Evelyn turned away from the screen.
Mateo opposed creating Elise.
Gabriel proceeded with Julian and Vale’s clinic.
Isabel left Gabriel after discovering the child existed.
She faked her death years earlier for another reason: Vale threatened infant Evelyn. Gabriel convinced her separation was temporary.
It lasted nearly three decades.
Everyone in Evelyn’s family survived by allowing someone else to mourn them.
Mateo continued.
“The fire was supposed to end the operation. Julian would expose Celeste. Voss would recover the buyer list. Gabriel would reveal himself to Evelyn after the arrests.”
Instead, Celeste used real gasoline and locked the escape route.
Mateo had been monitoring from Connecticut. He sent the remote alert that activated Gabriel’s hidden cameras, but he could not reach Manhattan before the fire.
He ended with a location.
An abandoned luxury hotel on Roosevelt Island.
Isabel and Elise would wait there until midnight.
Ruiz assembled a controlled team outside official channels.
Evelyn insisted on going.
Doctors refused to discharge her.
She signed an informed refusal and left in a wheelchair with burn dressings beneath a winter coat.
“I am not losing another daughter because someone says waiting is safer,” she told them.
The hotel lobby was dark.
Snow blew through shattered windows.
Ruiz, Evelyn, Lena, and Miriam followed fresh footprints toward the ballroom.
Inside stood Isabel Mercer.
Evelyn recognized her immediately despite twenty-eight missing years.
Isabel’s hands covered her mouth.
“My baby.”
Evelyn did not move toward her.
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“Gabriel said—”
“I know what Gabriel said.”
The distance between them remained.
Elise emerged from behind a curtain.
The child stared at Evelyn with frightened curiosity.
“Are you my mother?”
Evelyn’s anger broke without disappearing.
She knelt carefully despite her injuries.
“My name is Evelyn. They used part of me to create you without asking either of us what we wanted.”
Elise looked toward Isabel.
“Grandma says families can start after the truth.”
Evelyn’s eyes filled.
“Maybe.”
No instant embrace solved seven stolen years.
But Evelyn held out her unbandaged hand.
Elise took it.
Ruiz searched the hotel.
Mateo was not there.
Isabel said he left to stop Gabriel from completing the final auction.
The surviving Vale buyers were gathering aboard a private yacht in the East River. Gabriel intended to sell them the original Mourning Girl while secretly recording every participant.
Celeste had joined him.
“She tried to kill me,” Evelyn said.
“Gabriel believes she can still expose Vale,” Isabel replied.
“He always believes the operation becomes clean if one more dangerous person cooperates.”
A distant explosion shook the hotel windows.
Ruiz looked toward the river.
A yacht burned beneath the Queensboro Bridge.
The fire reflected across the black water.
A message arrived on Evelyn’s phone from Gabriel.
CELESTE BETRAYED US. MATEO IS ON BOARD. BRING THE CHILD LIST OR THEY BOTH DIE.
Ruiz stared at the burning vessel.
May you like
His father had survived twenty-two years only to become leverage in Gabriel’s final operation.
👉 Evelyn found her mother and daughter alive, but Gabriel demanded the child list while Mateo remained trapped aboard a burning yacht.
