Chapter 14 - The Vault Beneath the SnowSwiss authorities entered the Morgen Foundation through the hotel service tunnels.

Ruiz traveled with Evelyn, Isabel, Elise, Mateo, and Miriam under emergency international orders. Julian remained in New York under guard. Celeste surrendered at the border and provided the vault codes.
No one promised immunity.
She cooperated because Clara was still inside.
The gallery’s gas was not immediately lethal.
It was a conservation suppressant designed to remove oxygen during a fire. Within minutes, everyone inside would lose consciousness.
The outer vault required three identities.
A Weiss claimant.
A Mercer trustee.
A Vale director.
Evelyn supplied the claimant authorization.
Miriam held Gabriel’s emergency trust code.
Celeste placed her palm against the Vale scanner.
The door opened.
Clara lay near the original painting.
Rebecca was unconscious beside her.
Gabriel had disappeared through another passage.
Evelyn reached the child first and placed an oxygen mask over her face. Isabel helped carry Rebecca toward paramedics.
Celeste stared at the painting.
For years, she believed possessing it would prove she mattered.
She walked past it and lifted Clara’s other arm instead.
One choice did not erase the fire.
It showed she remained capable of another.
The original Mourning Girl hung inside a climate frame.
Lena Brooks, who joined the international evidence team, documented the opening.
Behind the canvas was the microfilm archive Gabriel built across decades.
Birth records.
Adoption files.
Fertility-clinic transfers.
Insurance claims.
Private buyers.
Judges.
Doctors.
Every manufactured heir.
Every stolen identity.
The archive could dismantle Vale International and expose museums across the world.
It could also reveal the current locations of children and adults placed in confidential protection.
A public release might end the secrecy.
It might also lead dangerous families directly to people who escaped them.
Gabriel had used that dilemma to preserve his control.
Evelyn ordered the archive transferred to separate independent teams.
Criminal evidence went to investigators.
Identity files went to protected advocates.
Restitution claims went to courts representing all known descendants.
No single institution received everything.
Mateo watched her.
“Gabriel will say fragmentation destroys the case.”
“Then the case learns to survive without one father deciding everything.”
Elise stood beside Clara’s stretcher.
The younger girl opened her eyes.
“Are you my sister?”
Elise considered it.
“We came from the same stolen choice.”
Clara reached for her hand.
“That sounds like yes.”
Evelyn looked away to hide her tears.
The vault search uncovered a hidden office.
Gabriel’s passport, coat, and blood were inside.
No body.
A tunnel led toward the mountain rail line.
He had escaped before the doors sealed.
Rebecca regained consciousness.
She claimed Gabriel activated the gas.
Celeste said Rebecca carried the controller.
The device was found between them with both fingerprints.
The final responsibility remained unresolved.
Julian called Evelyn from New York under monitored conditions.
“I can testify against Gabriel.”
“You can testify about yourself first.”
“I thought protecting the operation protected you.”
“You stood on my burned hand.”
Julian had no answer.
Evelyn ended the call.
She no longer needed to decide whether his love had been real before deciding his actions were unacceptable.
Swiss investigators opened the sealed foundation register.
Gabriel was not the organization’s highest authority.
A director known only as The Curator controlled every vault, claimant file, and emergency evacuation route.
The signature belonged to Mateo Ruiz.
Daniel looked toward his father.
Mateo stared at the page.
“I never signed that.”
The biometric record was valid.
The account had approved Gabriel’s escape thirteen minutes earlier.
Ruiz stepped back.
“Dad?”
Mateo looked toward the tunnel.
Someone had used his identity for decades.
Or he had hidden another role from his son.
Then the vault speakers activated.
Gabriel’s voice said:
May you like
“Mateo, the children are safe. Stop pretending you were never the Curator.”
👉 Gabriel escaped with help from an account belonging to Mateo, forcing Ruiz to question whether his father had secretly controlled the network they were trying to destroy.
