Chapter 8 - The Girl in Gabriel’s PhotographEvelyn enlarged the photograph until the pixels blurred.

The child had her dark eyes, narrow chin, and the same small indentation above the left eyebrow that Gabriel once called the Mercer mark.

But if the girl belonged to the Weiss line, the resemblance could come through blood rather than Gabriel.

“Who is she?” Evelyn asked.

No one knew.

The back of the photograph contained a handwritten date and one word:

ELISE.

Miriam searched Gabriel’s private trust records.

Seven years earlier, he began paying tuition and housing expenses through a foundation called Elise House.

The foundation provided confidential care for children involved in restitution cases.

Its director was Dr. Isabel Mercer.

Evelyn’s mother’s name.

Isabel supposedly died twenty-eight years earlier.

The foundation filing had been signed three months ago using a verified biometric credential.

Evelyn stared at the page.

“My mother too?”

Miriam looked shaken.

“I attended her funeral.”

“Did you see the body?”

“No.”

Gabriel had built his life from disappearances presented as deaths.

His own.

Possibly Isabel’s.

Possibly Mateo’s.

Each false funeral isolated another family member while preserving the operation.

Elise House occupied an old convent in Connecticut.

Ruiz obtained a welfare warrant based on the child’s connection to the arson case.

The property appeared abandoned when officers arrived.

Inside, they found seven bedrooms, a classroom, an art-conservation studio, and walls covered with family trees.

The children were gone.

One easel held a half-cleaned portrait.

The girl in Gabriel’s photograph had been removing grime from a painted woman’s face.

A note beside the brushes read:

Evelyn teaches by restoration. Elise learns by replacement.

Evelyn had never met the child.

Someone had designed Elise’s education around her.

Ruiz found a locked cabinet containing medical files.

Elise was born through a surrogate using an embryo created from Evelyn’s stolen genetic material.

The father was listed as Julian Cross.

Evelyn dropped the report.

“That’s impossible.”

Julian underwent genetic screening before marrying her. Vale’s fertility clinic preserved samples from both of them.

An embryo was created without consent.

Elise was biologically their daughter.

Seven years old.

Conceived before Evelyn and Julian met publicly.

The timeline meant Julian had supplied material before their staged introduction.

He may have known a child existed.

Ruiz confronted him.

Julian’s face collapsed when he saw the photograph.

“I thought she died.”

“You knew.”

“Gabriel told me the embryo failed.”

“You allowed them to create a child.”

“I was told it was a genetic claim safeguard.”

“You agreed to manufacture an heir.”

“Gabriel said Vale would kill Evelyn if her bloodline ended with her. A second heir would reduce the pressure.”

Instead, Elise gave Gabriel another person to control.

Evelyn demanded to speak with Julian by secure video.

“You had a daughter made from my body before you asked me to dinner.”

“I didn’t know whose genetic sample they used until later.”

“When?”

“After our wedding.”

“And you still said nothing.”

“Gabriel told me Elise remained safer if you believed she never existed.”

Evelyn looked at him with quiet disgust.

“Every man in my life confused secrecy with fatherhood.”

Julian began crying.

That did not change the facts.

A security camera inside Elise House preserved the evacuation.

Gabriel entered at 11:15 p.m., minutes before the townhouse fire. Isabel Mercer walked beside him.

Older.

Alive.

Elise followed carrying a small suitcase.

Gabriel received a phone call.

He listened, then said:

“Celeste changed the fuel. Evelyn is inside.”

Isabel turned on him.

“Then stop the operation.”

Gabriel answered:

“If we move now, Vale escapes again.”

Isabel struck him across the face.

The footage ended when she led Elise toward another exit.

Gabriel went to Manhattan.

He saw the townhouse burning.

He still chose the evidence operation over rescuing Evelyn.

Then the camera showed someone else entering Elise House after they left.

Mateo Ruiz.

Alive.

He looked directly at the lens.
