Chapter 11 - The Name on the DNA ReportPeyton did not believe Gordon.
He had forged medical records, signatures, accounts, videos, and deaths. A DNA report produced by his private laboratory carried no automatic truth.
She submitted the document for independent testing.
Lucinda refused to discuss it until her attorney arrived.
Then she admitted having a relationship with Samuel Vale before marrying Gordon.
“I thought it ended before you were conceived.”
“You never tested?”
“No.”
“Did Eleanor know?”
“She suspected.”
Gordon discovered old letters years later. He used them to control Lucinda and justify his hatred toward Peyton.
“You let him treat me like an outsider because he believed I was one,” Peyton said.
“I tried to keep peace.”
“You keep calling surrender peace.”
Samuel Vale had drafted Eleanor’s amended trust. If he was Peyton’s biological father, Gordon would argue the protector appointment resulted from undisclosed family influence.
The amendment could be challenged.
The trust could fall back into legal paralysis.
Peyton temporarily delegated authority to the independent fiduciary until the paternity question was resolved.
She would not let personal identity contaminate victim protection.
Franklin learned of the report from prosecutors.
He asked to speak with her.
“Biology does not change who raised you,” he said.
“Gordon barely raised me.”
“I did.”
Peyton held his hand.
“Yes.”
Franklin admitted Eleanor told him about Lucinda and Samuel years earlier. He chose not to test because Peyton was already his granddaughter in every meaningful way.
“Did Samuel know?”
“I don’t know.”
The investigators traced Samuel’s passport through international records.
He had entered Canada after disappearing, then returned to the United States under the name Stephen Vale.
His latest address belonged to a legal-aid clinic serving elderly abuse victims.
Samuel had spent years helping families challenge guardianships under another identity.
Cole found him at a small office in Maine.
Samuel surrendered immediately.
He had not died or been imprisoned.
Eleanor told him to disappear after Gordon discovered the amended trust. Samuel believed remaining visible would allow Gordon to challenge Peyton through scandal and paternity.
“You left my mother with him,” Peyton said over a secure video call.
“Lucinda refused to leave.”
“You left me.”
“I believed Franklin and Eleanor would protect you.”
“You let them carry a secret you created.”
“Yes.”
Samuel provided the original amendment files and years of evidence collected against Rosebridge. He also gave an independent DNA sample.
The result confirmed he was Peyton’s biological father.
Gordon was not.
Peyton felt no instant bond.
Samuel was a witness, an attorney, and a man who chose absence.
Relationship would require more than shared blood.
The amendment remained legally valid because Eleanor had disclosed the potential relationship in a sealed ethics statement. Her decision focused on Peyton’s public service, not Samuel’s paternity.
Gordon’s challenge weakened.
Yet Samuel’s evidence created a new problem.
Raymond Pike had not simply hidden Marina. He helped Samuel disappear and funded his legal clinic through seized criminal money that was never entered into evidence.
Pike believed using stolen funds to fight the network was justified.
The clinic saved dozens of elders.
It also depended on unlawful money laundering.
Every institution built against Gordon had begun copying part of his logic.
Samuel turned over the entire account voluntarily.
“I will accept the consequences.”
Gordon heard about the disclosure.
He requested another interview.
“You think confession makes them better than me?”
“No,” Peyton answered. “Consequences might.”
Gordon leaned forward.
“Then ask Samuel what Eleanor wanted done with Wyatt.”
Peyton looked at him.
“What are you talking about?”
Gordon claimed Wyatt was not Lucinda’s biological child.
He said Eleanor arranged a private adoption after a Rosebridge resident gave birth while under guardianship.
The infant’s mother was declared incompetent.
The Mercers took the child.
Wyatt had been raised inside the family whose network stole him from another woman.
The allegation could be another weapon.
Samuel’s face on the interview monitor showed that it was not.
