Judge Dyer approved the guardianship.
Teresa’s baby was removed shortly after birth.

The infant was privately adopted by Lucinda and Gordon.
They named him Wyatt.
Lucinda had suffered multiple pregnancy losses. Eleanor believed the adoption was lawful. Samuel discovered the coercive records years later.
“Did Gordon know?” Peyton asked.
“Yes.”
“Did Mom?”
“Not initially.”
Lucinda learned when Wyatt was seven.
She said nothing because she feared losing him.
Her silence allowed Teresa to remain confined.
Teresa was later listed as dead.

She might still be alive.
Wyatt watched the records from a secured interview room.

“They bought me?”
“They used an illegal guardianship to take you,” Peyton said. “That does not make you responsible for what happened as a baby.”
“I helped run the software.”
“That part belongs to you.”
He nodded.
The distinction mattered.
Wyatt had been victimized by the same network he later helped maintain.
His suffering did not erase Franklin’s shed.
It explained why Gordon made him fear exposure more than cruelty.
Wyatt agreed to provide full system access without demanding immunity. Prosecutors made no promises.
He identified Teresa’s current file.
She lived at Rosebridge West under the name Theresa Gray.
Officers found her inside a small supervised apartment owned by the Mercer Foundation. She was sixty years old and had been told her son died shortly after birth.
Teresa agreed to a DNA test only after an independent advocate explained every choice.
The match confirmed Wyatt was her son.
Their first meeting occurred through a protected video connection.
Wyatt could barely look at the screen.
“I helped the people who did this to you.”
Teresa studied him.
“You were raised by them.”
“I chose to stay.”
“You were also taught that leaving destroyed everyone.”
“I locked my grandfather in a shed.”
Teresa’s eyes filled.
“Then you answer for that. You do not answer for being stolen.”
No instant forgiveness followed.
No one asked her to become his mother on command.
She requested time.
Wyatt accepted it.
His cooperation opened encrypted Rosebridge accounts across four states. Hundreds of transfers emerged.
Some belonged to the Mercer network.
Others connected to separate family offices using the same software.
Gordon had licensed the guardianship model nationally.
The investigation expanded beyond Ridgecrest.
Then Wyatt found a command file created eighteen months earlier.

The plan predicted Franklin’s confinement, Peyton’s discovery, Rosebridge’s exposure, and the family’s financial collapse.
Someone had modeled the entire sequence.
Gordon did not create the file.
The author credential belonged to Eleanor Mercer.
The timestamp was six years after her death.
The signature could be forged.
Yet the file used a private encryption method known only to Eleanor, Samuel, and Franklin.
Franklin denied creating it.
Samuel denied creating it.
The plan seemed to anticipate Peyton’s promotion to Major Crimes captain before the appointment occurred.
It even predicted that she would formally recuse herself.
At the end was one instruction:
When Peyton becomes protector, direct her toward Ridgecrest National Archive Room Seven. Do not allow Gordon to reach it first.
Peyton looked at Cole.
“What is Room Seven?”
The Ridgecrest National Archive did not officially contain numbered private rooms.
Samuel recognized the phrase.
Room Seven was Eleanor’s name for a sealed evidence repository beneath the old county courthouse.
It contained the names of officials who originally authorized Rosebridge as a state witness program.
Deputy Commissioner Pike had access.
So did Gordon.
A security alert showed the courthouse repository had just been opened.
Gordon remained in custody.
